For 2 people sharing one room, a self-planned 3-day Kerala trip costs about Rs 23,000 to Rs 33,000 on a budget, Rs 34,000 to Rs 50,000 at mid-range, and Rs 65,000 or more for luxury, excluding travel to Kerala. Stay in one base and skip the overnight houseboat and the same 3 days can cost Rs 10,000 to Rs 18,000 for two. The route you pick matters more than the hotel tier. Last updated: October 2026.

Three days means 2 nights. Most first-timers fit Kochi, Munnar and Alleppey into those nights: one night in Munnar and one on a houseboat, with Kochi sightseeing around arrival and departure. The loop works, but driving drives the cost: you pay for a cab for all 3 days even though you sleep in only two places.
For a cheaper, calmer trip, pick one base instead: Kochi, Kumarakom or Munnar alone. The tables below price both approaches.
This table assumes 1 hotel night in Munnar, 1 overnight houseboat night in Alleppey (which includes lunch, dinner and breakfast on board), a private cab for 3 days, and food and entry fees outside the houseboat. Hotel bands use the 2026 ranges published for Kerala stays: about Rs 2,000 to Rs 4,000 per night for budget hotels and Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000 for mid-range hotels, with premium resorts at Rs 10,000 to Rs 25,000 and above. Private car hire is priced at about Rs 3,500 to Rs 5,000 per day in the same guides. Houseboat bands match our Alleppey houseboat cost guide.
| Expense for 2 people | Budget | Mid-range | Luxury |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hotel, 1 night in Munnar | Rs 2,500 - 4,000 | Rs 5,000 - 8,000 | Rs 12,000 - 25,000 |
| Houseboat, 1 night, all meals included | Rs 7,500 - 11,000 | Rs 12,000 - 18,000 | Rs 20,000 - 35,000 |
| Private cab with driver, 3 days | Rs 9,000 - 12,000 | Rs 10,500 - 15,000 | Rs 18,000 - 25,000 |
| Food outside the houseboat, about 2 days | Rs 2,000 - 3,000 | Rs 3,200 - 4,800 | Rs 7,500+ |
| Entry fees and activities | Rs 800 - 1,500 | Rs 1,500 - 3,000 | Rs 4,000+ |
| Tolls, parking, tips and small extras | Rs 1,000 - 1,500 | Rs 1,500 - 2,000 | Rs 3,000+ |
| Total for 2, excluding travel to Kerala | Rs 23,000 - 33,000 | Rs 34,000 - 50,000 | Rs 65,000+ |
Per person, that is roughly Rs 11,500 to Rs 16,500 budget and Rs 17,000 to Rs 25,000 mid-range. Package listings for a similar 3-day Munnar and houseboat route are often quoted per person on twin sharing, so double the headline figure before you compare it with this table, and check whether flights, all meals and entry fees are actually included.
A single-base trip removes most of the cab bill and both hotel changes. A published 2026 Kumarakom budget for 2 people over 3 days and 2 nights totals Rs 9,500 to Rs 12,400 at budget level and Rs 16,300 to Rs 26,500 at a more comfortable level, excluding travel to Kumarakom. That breakdown uses a basic AC room at Rs 2,800 per night, food at about Rs 2,400 to Rs 4,500 for the stay, and a 2-hour shikara cruise at Rs 1,400 for two instead of an overnight houseboat.
| Single-base plan for 2 | Budget total | Comfortable total |
|---|---|---|
| Stay, 2 nights in one room | Rs 5,000 - 5,600 | Rs 8,000 - 10,500 |
| Food for 3 days | Rs 2,400 - 3,000 | Rs 3,500 - 4,500 |
| Boat experience | Rs 1,400 - 2,000 for a shikara | Rs 3,000 - 7,500 for a longer private cruise |
| Local transport and activities | Rs 700 - 1,800 | Rs 1,800 - 4,000 |
| Total for 2 | Rs 9,500 - 12,400 | Rs 16,300 - 26,500 |
A Munnar-only 3 days sits between the two: recent 2026 Munnar cost research puts 3 days for two at Rs 12,310 budget and Rs 27,320 mid-range, including hotel, food, local transport and sightseeing but excluding travel to Munnar. Entry fees there are small: Eravikulam National Park is listed at Rs 200 per person in that research. See our Munnar 2 day itinerary budget for a day-by-day version you can extend by one night.
If that pace sounds rushed, it is. Our guide to how many days are enough for Kerala recommends 5 days as the comfortable minimum for this same circuit. In 3 days, dropping Thekkady and Kovalam is not a compromise, it is what makes the trip work.
Flights or trains to Kochi, insurance, shopping and houseboat extras such as special seafood are extra. Airport transfers are also extra if your cab package does not start at the airport: published guides put a Kochi airport taxi at about Rs 2,800 to Rs 3,500 one way. Food bands below follow our Kerala food guide.
December and January are the most expensive weeks, especially for houseboats and hill hotels. October to November and February to March offer better value. Monsoon, June to September, brings the lowest rates, but rain can close viewpoints and slow hill roads, which hurts a tight 3-day plan most. In monsoon, the single-base plan is the safer spend.
For a longer comparison, our 5-day Kerala trip cost for 2 people shows how the same items scale when you add Thekkady and an extra hotel night. The per-day cost falls as the trip lengthens, because the cab and arrival costs are spread over more days.
About Rs 23,000 to Rs 33,000 budget, Rs 34,000 to Rs 50,000 mid-range and Rs 65,000 or more luxury for the Kochi, Munnar and Alleppey loop, excluding travel to Kerala. A single-base 3 days without an overnight houseboat can cost Rs 9,500 to Rs 26,500 for two, depending on comfort level.
Enough for one circuit done briskly or one place done well, not enough for hills, backwaters and the coast together. Pick either the Munnar plus houseboat loop or a single base in Kochi, Kumarakom or Munnar.
Stay in one place, use local buses or short auto rides, eat locally, and swap the overnight houseboat for a 2-hour shikara cruise. The Kumarakom example above totals Rs 9,500 to Rs 12,400 for two before travel to Kumarakom.
Yes, on an overnight boat lunch, dinner and next-morning breakfast are included in the standard fare. Special seafood and other extras may be charged separately, so confirm inclusions in writing when you book.
About Rs 500 to Rs 750 per person per day eating at local restaurants, and Rs 800 to Rs 1,200 per person per day at mid-range restaurants. Houseboat days are already covered in the boat fare.
