Munnar 2 Day Itinerary on a Budget

A self-planned 2-day Munnar weekend from Kochi costs roughly Rs.4,500 per person on a tight budget, Rs.8,000 to 9,000 per person mid-range, for two people sharing costs. The recipe: KSRTC bus both ways, one night in a budget hotel, Eravikulam National Park and the Tea Museum on day two, and Mattupetty Dam in the afternoon. Here is the day-by-day plan with verified 2026 entry fees and real transport numbers.

How much does a 2-day Munnar trip cost?

Assuming two people travelling together, one night, and everything self-planned. The budget column uses the KSRTC bus, a budget hotel, and local eateries. Mid-range swaps the bus for a one-way private cab and a 3-star stay. The numbers below are rounded estimates, not quotes.

Item (per person)BudgetMid-range
Kochi-Munnar return transportRs.376 (KSRTC bus, Rs.188 each way)Rs.1,499 (one-way sedan cab each way)
Stay, 1 night (room split)Rs.1,250Rs.2,250
Food, 2 daysRs.1,400Rs.2,500
Entry fees + activitiesRs.480Rs.800
Local sightseeing taxi (split)Rs.750Rs.1,000
Total per personabout Rs.4,500about Rs.8,000-9,000

A comfortable setup, with a cab kept for both days and a tea-estate resort stay, lands around Rs.13,000 to 16,000 per person. Everything below explains where these numbers come from.

Day 1: Kochi to Munnar, arrive by afternoon

Take an early KSRTC bus from Ernakulam. The first buses leave around 5:15 AM, the fare is Rs.188, and the journey takes about 4 hours 15 minutes. If you prefer a cab, a one-way sedan starts at Rs.1,499 from Kochi city, and the drive takes 3.5 to 4 hours.

Stop en route at the Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls, both free and right on the Kochi-Munnar road. A spice and ayurvedic garden stop is the classic tourist halt, usually free to enter with a small purchase expected. Aim to reach Munnar by 2 PM, check in, and spend the evening walking Munnar town: the market, the old church area, and a cup of local tea.

Honest caveat: most Munnar hotels are non-AC by design, the hill air does the cooling. If you are travelling in March or April and want AC, confirm it when booking.

Day 2: the full sightseeing circuit, back by evening

This is the money day, and the order matters. Start early.

  1. 7:00 AM, Eravikulam National Park (Rajamalai). Entry is Rs.200 for Indian adults. Book tickets online on the official park website; queues run 2 to 3 hours in peak season (November to January). The Forest Department bus takes you up, then a 2 km walk to the viewpoint. Watch for the Nilgiri Tahr. Plan 3 hours.
  2. 11:30 AM, KDHP Tea Museum. Entry is Rs.150 for adults, with an optional tea-tasting add-on of about Rs.120. The 30-minute history film and the factory walk-through are worth it even if you skip the tasting.
  3. 2:30 PM, Mattupetty Dam and Echo Point. Dam entry is Rs.10 for adults. Boating starts at Rs.120 per person for the shared shikkara (30 minutes); a speed boat for 5 costs Rs.750 for 15 minutes. Echo Point is free and a short drive away.
  4. 5:00 PM, head back to Kochi. Evening KSRTC buses from Munnar to Ernakulam run from about Rs.135. A pre-booked one-way cab works too if you are travelling in a group.

Note the one timing trap: Eravikulam closes for 45 to 60 days in February and March for the Nilgiri Tahr calving season. If your weekend falls in that window, swap it for the Mattupetty-Top Station side on day two.

Getting there: bus vs taxi from Kochi

The KSRTC bus is the budget traveller's best friend: Rs.188 from Ernakulam, roughly 4 hours 15 minutes, buses from around 5:15 AM. A private sedan one-way starts at Rs.1,499 from the city (airport one-ways are priced higher, from Rs.3,649). If you want the cab for the whole weekend, listed round-trip tariffs run about Rs.9 per km with a 250 km daily minimum plus driver bata, which works out to roughly Rs.4,500 to 5,000 per day for a sedan. Where to stay: one-night tiers

TierWhat you getTypical listed price
Hostel dormBed in a shared dorm, common areasRs.600-900 per bed
Budget hotel / homestayClean private room, hot waterRs.2,000-3,500 per room
Mid-range 3-starBigger rooms, restaurant, valley viewsRs.4,000-7,000 per room
Tea-estate resortEstate views, activities, premium diningRs.8,000+ per room

Munnar's October average listed nightly rate sits around Rs.5,500, and weekend plus peak-season (November to January) rates run higher. Stay near Munnar town if you want to walk to dinner; estate stays are quieter but need a taxi for everything.

5 ways to keep the budget tight

  1. Take the bus over the cab. It saves about Rs.2,600 per person on a return trip, the single biggest cut you can make.
  2. Compress sightseeing into day two. One full-day local taxi for the standard circuit costs less than keeping a Kochi cab waiting overnight.
  3. Share the speed boat. Rs.750 split five ways is Rs.150 each, barely more than the Rs.120 shikkara.
  4. Skip the museum tasting add-on unless you are genuinely into tea, it is Rs.120 on top of the Rs.150 entry.
  5. Eat where the drivers eat. Local restaurants near the town centre cost roughly half of hotel restaurant prices for the same Kerala meals.
