A hill town at roughly 1,600 meters, built around tea. Temperatures sit 10 to 15 degrees below the Kerala coast year-round, which is the main reason people come.
Most of Munnar's appeal is the tea estates themselves: walking trails through Kanan Devan and other plantations, a tea museum with a working factory tour, and viewpoints like Top Station and Echo Point for the folded hills. Eravikulam National Park, home to the Nilgiri tahr, is a 40-minute drive out and worth a half day if it's open (it closes for a few months each year during the tahr breeding season, so check ahead).
The nearest airport is Kochi, roughly 4 hours by road. There is no train station in Munnar itself; most visitors arrive by private cab or a KSRTC bus from Kochi or Kottayam.
September through March is driest and coolest. The southwest monsoon (June to August) brings heavy rain and mist that can close some viewpoints, though the hills are at their greenest.
