Eat these first in Kerala: a banana-leaf sadhya at lunch, appam with stew or puttu with kadala curry at breakfast, and karimeen pollichathu, pearl spot wrapped in banana leaf, at least once. Food is one of the cheapest parts of the trip if you eat where locals eat: budget about Rs 500 to Rs 750 per person per day at local restaurants, and Rs 800 to Rs 1,200 at mid-range places. A sadhya runs from Rs 200 at a small local restaurant to Rs 650 to Rs 950 at a well-known Onam restaurant, and higher at heritage hotels. Last updated: October 2026.
Kerala cooking is built on coconut, coconut milk, curry leaves, black pepper, and tamarind. Rice is the base at lunch, and fermented rice batters drive breakfast.
| Dish | What it is | When to eat it |
|---|---|---|
| Sadhya | Vegetarian feast on a banana leaf: rice with sambar, parippu, avial, olan, thoran, kalan, pachadi, pickles, pappadam, banana chips, and payasam | Lunch, and the full version at Onam and weddings |
| Appam with stew | Lacy, bowl-shaped rice pancake with a soft centre, served with vegetable, chicken, or mutton stew in coconut milk | Breakfast or dinner |
| Puttu with kadala curry | Steamed cylinder of ground rice layered with grated coconut, served with black chickpea curry, banana, or pappadam | Breakfast |
| Karimeen pollichathu | Pearl spot fish marinated in spices, wrapped in banana leaf, and cooked in coconut oil | Lunch or dinner, best near the backwaters and Kochi |
| Payasam | The dessert course: ada pradhaman in jaggery and coconut milk, or palada in sweetened milk | End of a sadhya, or on its own |
Start with puttu and kadala curry for the most local breakfast. Puttu looks plain, steamed rice and coconut, but the kadala curry does the work: black chickpeas in a roasted coconut gravy. Crumble a pappadam over it and mix in a small banana if one is served.
Appam is the gentler choice, with vegetable stew for a mild coconut-milk start, or egg roast or chicken stew for something richer. Idiyappam, also called string hoppers, is the lightest of the three. Dosa and idli are everywhere too, but the three above are the Kerala-specific order.
On price, breakfast is a small line item: local eateries sit at the low end of eating out, while hotel buffets charge several times more for much the same appam. If your room rate excludes breakfast, eat out at least once. See our Kochi 1 day itinerary for where to start in Fort Kochi.
A typical sadhya has about 24 to 28 dishes served as a single course on a banana leaf, eaten with the right hand and without cutlery. Parippu with ghee comes first on the rice, then sambar, with rasam, buttermilk, and payasam toward the end. Outside festival season, many vegetarian restaurants serve a smaller everyday version, often called Kerala meals, with the same core curries.
| Where you eat it | Verified price example | What that buys |
|---|---|---|
| Small local vegetarian restaurant, everyday | Meals Rs 150, special sadhya Rs 200, extra payasam Rs 40 at a well-known Thrissur sadhya restaurant, visited June 2026 | Rice, core curries, two payasams in the special version, banana-leaf service |
| Popular city restaurant at Onam | Rs 400 to Rs 600 at Ariya Nivaas, Trivandrum; Rs 450 to Rs 650 at Grand Hotel, Ernakulam; Rs 400 to Rs 650 at Hotel Bharat, Thrissur | Full festive leaf, 24 or more items, book ahead in Onam week |
| Well-known Onam specialist, Kochi | Rs 650 to Rs 950 at Dhe Puttu, Kochi | Full sadhya with a modern, quality-focused kitchen |
| Hotel and heritage sadhya | Rs 900 to Rs 1,400 at Tharavadu, Casino Hotel, Kochi; Rs 1,400 to Rs 2,000 at Villa Maya, Trivandrum | 30 or more dishes in a hotel or heritage setting, slot booking at Onam |
The honest takeaway: the local Rs 200 to Rs 650 leaf covers the same dishes and order as the hotel version. Pay the higher bands for setting and a slower meal, not different food. Our month by month guide puts Onam in context with crowds and prices.
Karimeen, pearl spot, is the state fish and the seafood dish to prioritise. In pollichathu it is marinated, wrapped in banana leaf, and cooked so the leaf perfumes the fish. Expect bones, and eat slowly.
Price is where travellers get caught. Many menus list karimeen as as per size, because the charge follows weight and the day's catch. Always ask the price for the actual fish before it is cooked. Anchors: a ready-to-eat karimeen pollichathu for one fish is listed at Rs 345 by a national seafood retailer, and Kochi food guides put a meal for two at about Rs 300 at small local places, rising to Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,400 at larger city restaurants.
| Seafood order | How it is priced | Budget note |
|---|---|---|
| Karimeen pollichathu | Usually as per size; Rs 345 for a single-fish ready pack as a retail anchor | Confirm the price for your fish before cooking |
| Fish curry meals with rice | Priced as a meals set at local restaurants | The cheapest way to eat Kerala fish curry at lunch |
Overnight houseboats serve lunch, dinner, and breakfast in the fare, and karimeen is a common paid extra. Check inclusions in our Alleppey houseboat cost guide.
These bands are arithmetic from our 5-day Kerala trip cost breakdown for 2 people: Rs 5,000 to Rs 7,500 for food for two over 5 days at budget level, and Rs 8,000 to Rs 12,000 at mid-range, divided by two people and five days. That research also puts a mid-range restaurant meal at Rs 400 to Rs 800 per person, against Rs 1,200 to Rs 2,500 at a resort.
| Style | Food per person per day | How you eat |
|---|---|---|
| Budget, local eateries | Rs 500 to Rs 750 | Puttu or appam breakfast, Kerala meals or sadhya at lunch, parotta or dosa dinner, tea and snacks |
| Mid-range restaurants | Rs 800 to Rs 1,200 | Cafe breakfast, restaurant sadhya or biryani, one seafood dinner in the mix |
| Resort and hotel dining | Rs 1,200 to Rs 2,500 for a single meal | One resort dinner can cost more than a full local day |
Vegetarians eat well in Kerala: a sadhya is fully vegetarian, and puttu, appam, idiyappam, avial, thoran, and olan are on almost every menu. Vegans should check two things: avial and some pachadi use curd, and payasam may be milk-based unless it is a jaggery and coconut-milk pradhaman.
The sadhya banana-leaf feast is the signature meal, followed by appam with stew, puttu with kadala curry, and karimeen pollichathu. Malabar biryani, Kerala parotta, banana chips, and payasam complete the list most travellers work through.
From Rs 200 for a special sadhya at a small Thrissur restaurant to Rs 400 to Rs 650 at popular city restaurants at Onam, Rs 650 to Rs 950 at Dhe Puttu in Kochi, and Rs 900 to Rs 2,000 at hotel and heritage venues. Everyday Kerala meals at local restaurants cost less than a full festive sadhya.
There is no single price: most menus list it as as per size. A single-fish ready pack is listed at Rs 345, and Kochi guides put a meal for two including it at about Rs 300 at small local places and about Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,400 at larger restaurants. Always confirm the price for your fish first.
About Rs 500 to Rs 750 per person per day eating locally, and Rs 800 to Rs 1,200 per person per day at mid-range restaurants. One resort meal alone can run Rs 1,200 to Rs 2,500 per person.
Some of it is: fish curry, kadala curry, and pickle are properly hot. Stew, olan, avial, and appam are gentle, and a sadhya mixes hot, sour, sweet, and mild on one leaf.
Yes, on overnight boats lunch, dinner, and the next morning's breakfast are included in the standard fare. Special seafood such as karimeen may be charged extra or bought at a market stop, so confirm in writing when you book.
