Two days in Vagamon for 2 people costs about Rs 9,200 to Rs 15,000 self-planned, before optional adventure activities. The big item is transport: Vagamon is about 103 km and 3 hours 20 minutes from Kochi, and a one-way cab starts at Rs 2,846. Sightseeing itself is cheap: the meadows and adventure park entry is Rs 25 per adult on the DTPC Idukki ticket, and the pine forest lists Rs 10 per adult. Spend day 1 on the pine forest, the meadows and Thangal Para, and day 2 on Kurisumala, Murugan Mala and the adventure park, then drive down before dark.

Vagamon sits on the Kottayam and Idukki border: grassy hills, a planted pine forest and three small sacred hills, Kurisumala, Thangal Para and Murugan Mala. It is smaller and quieter than Munnar, and everything worth seeing sits within a few kilometres of town, which is why 2 days is enough. What it does not forgive is a late start: the last stretch is a hill road with hairpin bends.
Figures checked in October 2026. The cab fare is the listed starting one-way fare from Kochi before GST; food bands are the per-person per-day ranges from our Kerala food guide. Stay prices are anchored on current listings: hostel dorms from Rs 693 a bed, and a hillside resort room listed from Rs 3,000 a night, with its larger suite at Rs 4,500.
| Item (2 people, 1 night, 2 days) | Budget | Mid-range |
|---|---|---|
| Transport, cab Kochi to Vagamon and back (from Rs 2,846 one way) | Rs 5,700 | Rs 5,700 |
| Stay, 1 night | Rs 1,400 (two dorm beds) | Rs 3,000 - 4,500 |
| Food, 2 days | Rs 2,000 - 3,000 (local restaurants) | Rs 3,200 - 4,800 |
| Entry fees: meadows and pine forest | Rs 70 | Rs 70 |
| Total | About Rs 9,200 - 10,200 | About Rs 12,000 - 15,000 |
Two honest notes. First, transport is more than half of the budget version, so the biggest saving is the bus: direct buses run from Kochi, and Kottayam, about 64 km away, is the nearest railway station. Check the current KSRTC fare rather than trusting any blog figure. Second, paragliding is not in the total: at Rs 3,999 to Rs 4,599 per person for a 10 to 15 minute tandem flight, it adds Rs 8,000 to Rs 9,200 for two. Decide before you go, not at the gate.
Aim to finish the hill section in daylight: mist rolls in early, and the hairpins are no place to learn the road after dark. If you are pairing Vagamon with the bigger tea hills, see our Munnar 2 day itinerary and the best time to visit Kerala, month by month.
Morning, the pine forest. Start here while the crowds are thin. Travel listings give 8:30 am to 6 pm, with entry at Rs 10 per adult and Rs 5 per child; confirm at the gate, as the DTPC page does not list pine forest timings. Allow 1 to 2 hours. The red-earth floor gets slippery after rain, so wear grippy shoes.
Midday, the meadows (Mottakunnu). The open grassy hills are the image of Vagamon. DTPC Idukki lists the meadows as open from 9 am to 9:45 pm, on the same Rs 25 adult and Rs 15 child ticket as the adventure park. There is little shade, so avoid the midday sun. Walk a ridge, keep to the paths.
Evening, Thangal Para. About 3 km from the Kurisumala side of town, Thangal Para is a huge rounded rock at about 2,500 feet holding the tomb of Sheikh Fariduddin, and one of the best viewpoints in Vagamon. Listed hours are 6 am to 6 pm, so time it for the last hour of light and head back to town for dinner.
Early morning, Kurisumala. The Mountain of the Holy Cross, listed as open from 4 am to 8:30 pm, with a Trappist ashram and dairy farm at its foot. The climb is steep and the parking area is about 3.5 km from town. It is a working monastery, so keep voices low and follow the signs. Go early, before the heat and the crowds.
Mid-morning, Murugan Mala. About 2 km from town, on the eastern side of Kurisumala, with a rock-cut temple to Lord Murugan on the summit. Listed hours are 6 am to 6 pm. DTPC notes October to April as the best time, and the path is best skipped when the rock is wet and streaming after rain.
Afternoon, the adventure park, then down. The DTPC adventure park at Kolahalamedu is listed as open from 9 am to 5:45 pm. Paragliding operators list a 10 to 15 minute tandem flight at Rs 3,999 to Rs 4,599 per person, ages 14 and up, weights up to 100 kg, and it is wind dependent, so a booked slot can still be cancelled on the day. Leave by about 3:30 to 4 pm so the hairpins are behind you before dark.
| Stay type | Typical price per night | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Hostel dorms | From Rs 693 per bed | Solo travellers and groups keeping the budget version honest |
| Homestays and budget rooms in town | About Rs 1,500 - 2,500 | Couples without a car, walkable food and buses |
| Mid-range resorts | About Rs 3,000 - 4,500 per room | Couples and families wanting a view and a quiet night |
| Premium resorts and full villas | Rs 8,000 and up | Groups and slow stays where the property is the destination |
Stay in or near town if you arrive by bus: there is no useful public transport between the sights, so an outlying resort makes you dependent on its own car for every outing. Holiday weekends fill Vagamon fast, so book a weekday if you can.
October to February is the settled window: DTPC rates October to April best for Murugan Mala, paragliding operators rate November to February best for flying, and temperatures run roughly between 10 and 25 degrees. Pack a warm layer, shoes with grip for wet rock, a rain jacket in October, and cash for tickets and parking.
About Rs 9,200 to Rs 10,200 on the budget version (dorm beds, local food, cab both ways) and about Rs 12,000 to Rs 15,000 mid-range, checked October 2026. Paragliding, at Rs 3,999 to Rs 4,599 per person, is extra. Using buses instead of a cab is the biggest single saving.
Yes. The pine forest, meadows, Thangal Para, Kurisumala and Murugan Mala all sit within a few kilometres of town. Two days covers them without rushing. A third day only makes sense for a slow resort stay.
About 103 km, and roughly 3 hours 20 minutes by cab. Add time for traffic, food stops and rain, and be off the hairpins before dark.
Not as of the latest reports checked for this guide: Kerala reports on 19 October 2026 said the glass bridge was still closed for strengthening work and would reopen only after a safety test. Check locally before you travel, and do not build your itinerary around it.
The DTPC Idukki ticket for the meadows and the adventure park is Rs 25 for adults and Rs 15 for children. The pine forest lists Rs 10 per adult and Rs 5 per child in travel listings; confirm at the gate, as timings and the small fee there are not published on the DTPC page.
You can, with a 6:30 am start, but you will spend about 7 hours driving for about 6 hours of sightseeing. One night in Vagamon makes the same drive relaxed, which is what this itinerary assumes. Cost the wider trip in the trip budget planner.
