A 3-day self-drive from Bangalore to Munnar costs roughly Rs.15,000 to Rs.17,500 for two people in a petrol car, or about the same in comfort mode with a diesel car and better hotels. Fuel is the biggest line item, then the stay, then food. Tolls are a distant fourth. Every figure below is checked against 2026 sources, and the math is shown so you can redo it for your own car.
Bangalore to Munnar is about 460 to 512 km one way, taking 9 to 11 hours with normal stops. The fastest route runs down NH 44 via Salem, then Dindigul, Theni, and up the Gap Road into Munnar; drivers on Team-BHP note it has roughly 17 hairpin bends on the final ghat climb. The alternate route via NH 544 (Coimbatore, Pollachi, Udumalpet) is slightly longer but has a gentler climb with a single hairpin bend. Both are fully national highway until the hills. Leave Bangalore by 5 am and you reach Munnar by early evening with two food breaks.
A note on the backlog math: the round trip plus two days of local sightseeing in Munnar works out to roughly 1,050 km total. That is the number all fuel estimates below are built on.
Pump prices in Bangalore on 4 October 2026 were Rs.111.11 per litre for petrol and Rs.99.01 per litre for diesel (The Hindu BusinessLine fuel tracker). For 1,050 km:
| Car type | Assumed mileage | Fuel needed | Cost at current prices |
|---|---|---|---|
| Petrol hatchback/sedan | 15 km/l | 70 litres | Rs.7,800 |
| Diesel SUV/sedan | 18 km/l | 58 litres | Rs.5,800 |
The Rs.2,000 gap is why diesel makes sense for long highway runs. Mileage on the ghat section will be worse than on the highway, so treat these as the low end of the range, not the exact bill. Tank up in Bangalore: hill-town pumps in Munnar are fine for top-ups but you do not want to hunt for one at 11 pm.
The Bangalore to Munnar corridor crosses roughly 6 toll plazas one way, and the total toll for a car is Rs.700 to Rs.1,000 one way. That makes the round trip Rs.1,400 to Rs.2,000. Keep your FASTag funded; every NHAI plaza on this corridor takes it, and paying cash (where still accepted) costs more and takes longer.
Going further down the coast changes the math. Bangalore to Alleppey is 577 km with 11 toll plazas and a one-way car toll of Rs.765 (tolltax.in, October 2026). For a 3-day weekend, though, Alleppey is a stretch: that is 12 hours each way. Munnar is the realistic 3-day target from Bangalore.
Budget hotels in Munnar list tariffs starting around Rs.940 to Rs.2,000 per night (Autumn Trees, MGS Residency, Munnar Mansion, Hotel Emerald Inn, Doubletree Villa, per TravelTriangle's 2026 hotel list). Mid-range 3-star options list Rs.2,100 to Rs.2,550 per night (Bellmount Resorts, Poopada Resorts, The Shade, Blue Bells Valley Resort). These are "per night onwards" listed tariffs; actual booking prices move with the season and the day of the week.
| Stay tier | Per night | 2 nights |
|---|---|---|
| Budget hotel/homestay | Rs.1,000 - Rs.2,000 | Rs.2,000 - Rs.4,000 |
| Mid-range resort | Rs.2,100 - Rs.2,550 | Rs.4,200 - Rs.5,100 |
Book a place that includes parking. Town-center hotels sometimes charge for it, and on weekends Munnar's streets fill up fast.
Food is the one line item no site publishes reliably, so treat this as a planning estimate, not a verified figure: Rs.600 per person per day for simple restaurants, Rs.800 per person per day if you eat at hotel restaurants. For two people over 3 days, that is Rs.3,600 to Rs.4,800. Munnar's entry fees are small: Eravikulam and the tea museums are the only paid stops most visitors make, and our Munnar 2-day itinerary lists the 2026 fees.
| Line item | Budget (petrol car) | Comfort (diesel car) |
|---|---|---|
| Fuel (1,050 km) | Rs.7,800 | Rs.5,800 |
| Tolls (round trip) | Rs.1,400 - Rs.2,000 | Rs.1,400 - Rs.2,000 |
| Stay (2 nights) | Rs.2,000 - Rs.4,000 | Rs.4,200 - Rs.5,100 |
| Food (2 people, 3 days, estimate) | Rs.3,600 | Rs.4,800 |
| Total | Rs.15,000 - Rs.17,500 | Rs.16,000 - Rs.18,000 |
Per person, that is roughly Rs.7,500 to Rs.9,000 for the whole weekend. The surprise in the table: diesel plus mid-range hotels costs about the same as petrol plus budget hotels, because diesel is cheaper per litre and the car goes further on each tank. If you already own a diesel car, the comfort upgrade is nearly free.
A one-way Bangalore to Munnar cab starts at about Rs.5,500 for a non-AC Dzire and Rs.6,200 for an AC Dzire; an Innova Crysta starts around Rs.9,500 (2026 fare guide). Round trips run roughly 1.8x to 2x the one-way fare, and tolls, interstate state tax, parking, and the driver allowance (Rs.350 to Rs.500 per day) are extra. All in, a hired sedan round trip lands around Rs.16,000 to Rs.18,000, before you pay for your own stay and food. The self-drive petrol math above lands in the same band, so the cab is not obviously cheaper: the real reason to hire one is that a local driver handles the ghat roads while you look out of the window.
You can, but one of the two days is almost entirely driving. The 3-day shape (drive down, full day in Munnar, drive back) is the first one where the trip feels like a trip and not a commute. See our 3/5/7/10-day framework for why.
NH 44 via Salem, Dindigul, and Theni is the shortest and fastest. NH 544 via Coimbatore, Pollachi, and Udumalpet is slightly longer with a gentler ghat climb. Both are good; pick the Theni route going and the Udumalpet route returning, and you see different country each way.
No. A personal car needs no interstate permit; just carry the registration, insurance, pollution certificate, and your driving licence. State entry taxes apply to commercial vehicles (taxis pay roughly Rs.400 to Rs.700 one way per sedan for the three states), not to private cars.
The NH 44 highway section is fine at night. The ghat climb to Munnar is not: narrow stretches, hairpins, and occasional truck traffic. Plan to finish the climb before dark. This is also why leaving Bangalore at 5 am matters.
Effectively yes on all NHAI toll plazas on this corridor. Keep the tag funded before you leave; a dead tag means double charges at some plazas.
