Kerala Trip Cost Per Day for Backpackers

Plan on Rs 1,300 to Rs 1,950 per day for a realistic backpacker day in Kerala: a hostel dorm bed, three meals at local restaurants, town buses and ferries, and one paid sight averaged across the trip. Travellers reporting to Budget Your Trip averaged Rs 1,098 a day at the tightest budget level, by mixing in free days and the cheapest beds. Intercity moving days cost a little more, starting with a KSRTC bus from Rs 188 for Kochi to Munnar.

The short answer: cost per day, line by line

Kerala is easier to backpack cheaply than most Indian states because the cheap options are the normal local options: dorms in the backpacker towns, local restaurants, and a dense KSRTC bus and train network. The table is built from HostelWorld based hostel data, traveller spending reported to Budget Your Trip, and food and transport prices already verified for this site. Prices checked October 2026.

ItemCost per dayNotes
Dorm bedRs 500 to Rs 700Average dorm bed is $5 in Alleppey and $7 in Munnar in HostelWorld based data
Food at local restaurantsRs 500 to Rs 750Three local meals a day; see the food guide linked below
Local transport in townRs 100 to Rs 200Budget travellers averaged $2 a day on local transport
Activities, averagedRs 200 to Rs 300Free beach and town days mixed with paid entry days
Total, staying in one baseRs 1,300 to Rs 1,950Per person, per day, excluding travel to Kerala
Intercity moving day, extraFrom Rs 188 per bus legKSRTC Kochi to Munnar starts at Rs 188; it replaces, not adds to, most local transport

Why is the reported average lower, at Rs 1,098? Travellers who hit that level use the cheapest dorm in town, eat some meals at the smallest places, and have several days with no paid activity and almost no transport. Treat Rs 1,098 as the floor, Rs 1,300 to Rs 1,950 as the number to budget with, and anything saved as your buffer for a splurge day.

Where backpackers sleep: dorms and private hostel rooms

Hostel clusters sit where backpackers already go: Fort Kochi, Alleppey near the beach and the finishing point, Munnar town and Old Munnar, and the Varkala cliff. In the HostelWorld based averages, a dorm bed costs $5 a night in Alleppey and $7 a night in Munnar, which is why the table above uses Rs 500 to Rs 700. Hill stations run a little higher than the coast, and prices in all four towns rise in the December to January peak.

A private room in a hostel or guesthouse averages $9 in Alleppey and $10 in Munnar in the same data. For two people, one private room split two ways can cost about the same per person as two dorm beds. Solo travellers pay the full room, so dorms stay cheapest solo. Outside the hostel towns, a homestay room is the fallback: confirm whether breakfast is included before comparing it with a dorm.

What food costs on a backpacker budget

Food is where Kerala rewards eating local. Our Kerala food guide puts a full day of eating at local restaurants at Rs 500 to Rs 750 per person: an appam or puttu breakfast, a rice based lunch, and a local dinner. A sadhya, the banana leaf feast, starts at Rs 200 at a small local restaurant, so it works as an occasional lunch splurge rather than a daily habit.

Two habits hold the food line down. Eat where the lunch crowd is local: those places price for residents. And watch the fish line: karimeen is priced by size, so confirm the price before it is cooked. That one question prevents the most common budget blowout in coastal restaurants.

Getting around: buses and trains beat taxis by a day of budget

Transport decides whether a moving day costs Rs 200 or Rs 3,000. The KSRTC bus from Kochi (Ernakulam) to Munnar starts at Rs 188 and takes about 4 hours, while a one way taxi on the same route costs about Rs 2,800 to Rs 3,500: more than a full day and a half of total backpacker budget for one ride. Our Kochi to Munnar taxi fare vs bus cost comparison breaks that route down in full. On the coast, trains are even cheaper: Kochi to Alleppey by train starts at Rs 15 in the fares we checked for our transport comparison.

Use this order on every move:

1. Stay 2 to 3 nights per base. Every move adds a bus or train fare and usually a pricier first night, so fewer bases means fewer moving costs.

2. Move by train along the coast and by KSRTC bus into the hills, where there is no railway. Book hill buses early in the day, because the Munnar road is slow after dark.

3. Walk the compact sights: Fort Kochi, the Varkala cliff path, and Alleppey beach are all walkable from the hostel areas, which is how the $2 a day local transport average is possible.

4. Save auto rickshaws for station runs with your pack, and agree the fare before you get in where meters are not used.

Activities: free days, cheap days, and the one big splurge

Most of what backpackers come for is free or cheap: beaches, backwater village walks, tea country viewpoints from the road, and town wandering in Fort Kochi. Paid days are modest when you pick them well. Entry to Eravikulam National Park near Munnar is listed at Rs 200 per person in the research behind our Kerala trip cost for 3 days guide, and a shared shikara ride in Alleppey starts far below houseboat money: our shikara vs houseboat comparison puts shikara hire at Rs 700 to Rs 1,500 per hour per boat, split between everyone on board.

The one item that breaks the budget is a private overnight houseboat, priced per boat rather than per person. Use public ferries and shikaras in Alleppey instead, and keep a houseboat for a group trip where the cost is split several ways. Two or three paid days in a week, the rest free, is how the Rs 200 to Rs 300 a day activity line holds up.

What a week works out to

Trip lengthBackpacker totalNotes
7 daysAbout Rs 9,500 to Rs 14,5007 days at Rs 1,300 to Rs 1,950, plus 2 intercity bus legs from Rs 188 each
10 daysAbout Rs 13,500 to Rs 20,500Adds 3 more base days and usually 1 more intercity move
14 daysAbout Rs 19,000 to Rs 28,500Two slow weeks; longer stays often negotiate better dorm rates

These totals exclude travel to and from Kerala, a visa, and an overnight houseboat. Add those separately. To test your own route, run the numbers in our trip budget planner.

Honest caveat: hostel averages hide a wide spread. The cheapest dorm in a town can be half the average and a peak season bed in Munnar can be well above it, so check live prices for your exact dates before you lock a total.

FAQ

Is Rs 1,000 a day enough for backpacking Kerala?

It is possible but tight. Travellers reporting to Budget Your Trip averaged Rs 1,098 a day at budget level, and hitting that needs the cheapest dorm, all local food, mostly free activities, and few intercity moves. Budget Rs 1,300 to Rs 1,950 and you have room for normal choices.

What is the cheapest way to travel between towns in Kerala?

Trains on the coastal line and KSRTC buses into the hills. Kochi to Alleppey by train starts at Rs 15, and the KSRTC bus from Kochi to Munnar starts at Rs 188, against about Rs 2,800 to Rs 3,500 for a taxi on the Munnar route.

Can a backpacker afford a houseboat in Alleppey?

Only by splitting one. A private overnight houseboat is priced per boat, so a group dividing the fare can fit it in, while a solo traveller usually cannot. The budget alternative is a shikara at Rs 700 to Rs 1,500 per hour per boat, or the public ferry.

Which towns have the most hostels in Kerala?

Fort Kochi, Alleppey, Munnar, and Varkala have the deepest hostel choice, with average dorm beds at $5 in Alleppey and $7 in Munnar in HostelWorld based data. Smaller places rely on homestays and guesthouses instead.

How much should a backpacker budget for food per day in Kerala?

Rs 500 to Rs 750 per person per day eating at local restaurants, based on our food guide research. A sadhya from Rs 200 at a small local restaurant is the best value splurge lunch.
