Kerala Itinerary for 4 Days

The best Kerala itinerary for 4 days is Kochi to Munnar on Day 1, a full day in Munnar on Day 2, Munnar to an Alleppey houseboat on Day 3, and Fort Kochi before departure on Day 4. That is 2 nights in Munnar and 1 night on a houseboat. For 2 people self-planning, budget about Rs 30,000 to Rs 42,000, or Rs 44,000 to Rs 66,000 at mid-range, excluding travel to Kerala.

Tea gardens in Munnar, Kerala

Four days is tight, so the route has to do the work. This plan goes one way only: up to the hills, down to the backwaters, and back to Kochi. It does not add Thekkady or Kovalam.

The 4-day route at a glance

DayRouteDistance and timeNight in
Day 1Kochi to Munnar via NH 85About 130 km, 4 to 4.5 hours by car, 5 to 6 hours by busMunnar

Day 3Munnar to Alleppey, board houseboat by 12 noon162 to 170 km, 5 to 6 hoursHouseboat, Alleppey
Day 4Alleppey to Kochi, Fort Kochi, departure53 to 60 km, 1.5 to 2 hoursDeparture

Day 1: Kochi to Munnar

Leave Kochi by 8 to 9 AM. The road runs via Kothamangalam, Neriamangalam and Adimali on NH 85, then climbs on a winding ghat road. Stop at Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls on the way up: both are roadside stops and add about 45 minutes in total. Reach Munnar by early afternoon, check in, and keep the rest of the day light: a tea garden walk near your stay and an early night.

A private cab lets you stop at the falls. KSRTC buses from Ernakulam or Aluva are cheaper but take 5 to 6 hours with no photo stops. There is no train or flight to Munnar: the airport, about 110 km away, and Ernakulam and Aluva stations are the gateways, then it is road only.

Day 2: A full day in Munnar

This is the only full sightseeing day, so order it by direction, not by wishlist. Start with Eravikulam National Park in the morning, when queues and cloud are usually lower, then the KDHP Tea Museum, then Mattupetty Dam, Echo Point and Kundala Lake in one loop.

For timings, a worked per-person total and what to skip when queues build, see our Munnar 2 day itinerary budget and the full Munnar sightseeing entry fees list.

Day 3: Munnar to Alleppey houseboat

Leave Munnar by 6:30 to 7 AM. This is the longest drive of the trip, 162 to 170 km in 5 to 6 hours, and it has a hard deadline: overnight houseboats check in at 12 noon. A late start does not shorten the cruise fare, it shortens the cruise itself.

On board, boats cruise to about 5:30 PM with a lunch halt, anchor overnight, then cruise again to a 9 AM checkout. Lunch, dinner and breakfast are included, and on deluxe boats bedroom AC typically runs at night only. Full timings are in our Alleppey houseboat check-in and check-out guide.

  1. Confirm the exact boarding point and the boat name the day before, not on Day 3 morning.
  2. Tell the crew about food preferences and any seafood extras before the boat leaves the jetty, as extras are charged separately.

Day 4: Alleppey to Kochi and departure

Check out at 9 AM, drive 1.5 to 2 hours to Kochi, and use what is left for Fort Kochi and Mattancherry: the Chinese fishing nets, St Francis Church, the Dutch Palace and the Paradesi Synagogue. Entry fees on this circuit are very small, under Rs 20 in total on our earlier check, but closures decide the order: the Synagogue is closed on Fridays and Saturdays and the Dutch Palace is closed on Fridays, per Kerala Tourism listings.

If your departure is early, pick the fishing nets and one Mattancherry sight, then leave a real buffer for the airport. With a late departure, our Kochi 1 day itinerary gives the timed version of this circuit.

How much does a 4-day Kerala trip cost for 2 people?

The table below is self-planned, for 2 people sharing one room, with a private cab kept for all 4 days. Hotel and houseboat bands match the 2026 ranges used across this site: budget hotels in Munnar at about Rs 2,500 to Rs 4,000 a night, mid-range at Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000, and an overnight houseboat at Rs 7,500 to Rs 11,000 at budget level and Rs 12,000 to Rs 18,000 at mid-range, with all meals on board included.

Hotel in Munnar, 2 nightsRs 5,000 - 8,000Rs 10,000 - 16,000
Houseboat, 1 night, all meals includedRs 7,500 - 11,000Rs 12,000 - 18,000
Private cab with driver, 4 daysRs 12,000 - 16,000Rs 14,000 - 20,000
Food outside the houseboat, about 3 daysRs 3,000 - 4,500Rs 4,800 - 7,200

Total for 2, excluding travel to KeralaRs 30,000 - 42,000Rs 44,000 - 66,000

Per person, that is about Rs 15,000 to Rs 21,000 budget and Rs 22,000 to Rs 33,000 mid-range. Packages for this route are usually quoted per person on twin sharing, so double the headline before comparing, and check whether entry fees and meals are included.

Is 4 days enough for Kerala?

Enough for hills plus backwaters done properly, not enough to add wildlife or the beach coast as well. The gain over a 3-day trip is the full Day 2 in Munnar. With 5 days, add a Kochi night at the start or a Thekkady night between Munnar and Alleppey.

Tips to make 4 days work

  1. Book the cab as one 4-day package, not as separate one-way drops. One-way legs bill the return journey and cost more per kilometre.
  2. Check your Day 2 weekday before you finalise: if it is a Monday, swap the Tea Museum to Day 1 afternoon or drop it, as it is closed on Mondays.
  3. Protect the Day 3 noon boarding above everything else. Cut a Munnar sight on Day 2 evening rather than leaving late on Day 3.
  4. Keep Day 4 light if you depart that day. Fort Kochi is close to the Alleppey road, but the airport is not.
  5. In monsoon, June to September, keep extra time for the ghat road and check Eravikulam and road status on the morning, as heavy rain can close or slow both.

FAQ

What is the best Kerala itinerary for 4 days?

Kochi to Munnar on Day 1, a full Munnar day on Day 2, Munnar to an Alleppey houseboat on Day 3, and Fort Kochi before departure on Day 4. It is 2 nights in Munnar and 1 night on a houseboat, with no backtracking.

How much does a Kerala trip cost for 4 days for 2 people?

About Rs 30,000 to Rs 42,000 budget and Rs 44,000 to Rs 66,000 mid-range when self-planned for 2 people sharing one room, excluding travel to Kerala. The cab for 4 days and the houseboat night are the two biggest items.

Is 2 days enough for Alleppey on this trip?

You get one houseboat night, which is the core Alleppey experience: boarding at noon, an afternoon cruise, a night anchored, and checkout at 9 AM. A second day would only be needed for a shikara ride through narrower canals or a beach and town day, which a 4-day trip does not have room for.

Can I add Thekkady to a 4-day Kerala itinerary?

Not without dropping something. Munnar to Thekkady is another hill transfer, and fitting it in means losing either the full Munnar day or the houseboat night. Add Thekkady only if you extend to 5 days.

What time should I leave Munnar for the houseboat?

By 6:30 to 7 AM. The drive is 162 to 170 km and takes 5 to 6 hours, and overnight boats check in at 12 noon in Alleppey.

Honest caveat: costs are planning estimates from 2026 ranges, not quotes. Hotel, cab and houseboat rates move with season and exact dates, especially in December and January, so confirm all three in writing for your dates before you compare a package headline price.
