Wayanad is a high plateau in north Kerala, all mist, forest, and coffee estates. It is the best trekking base in the state and the most reliable place to see wild elephants in their own habitat.
The Chembra Peak trek (permits are capped daily, so start early), Edakkal Caves with their stone-age petroglyphs, wildlife safaris at Muthanga or Tholpetty, Banasura Sagar dam, coffee and spice plantation walks, and Soochipara waterfalls after the monsoon. For a ready-made plan, see our 4-day Wayanad trek itinerary.
Calicut airport is about 3 hours by road. There is no train station in Wayanad; most visitors arrive by private cab or KSRTC bus from Calicut.
October to March is the main season. June to August brings the monsoon: the plateau is at its greenest, but expect trek closures and leeches on forest trails.
