Four days built around trails, not sightseeing loops. Wayanad's high plateau stays cool enough to trek most of the year, and the reward-to-effort ratio is the best in Kerala.
Arrive Kalpetta from Calicut airport (about 3 hours by road), settle into a homestay
Afternoon climb to Edakkal Caves for the stone-age petroglyphs; the 45-minute ascent is a good warm-up for Chembra
Dinner in Kalpetta town, early night
Good to know: Do Edakkal the afternoon you arrive. The climb is a good warm-up, and it saves fresh legs for Chembra.
Start early with a packed breakfast; guided trek to the heart-shaped lake and the summit, 4 to 5 hours round trip
Forest department permits are capped each day, so weekdays are easier than weekends
Rest in the afternoon, plantation dinner in the evening
Good to know: Permits are capped and issued first-come at the base. An early weekday start matters more than fitness here.
Morning wildlife safari at Muthanga or Tholpetty, best between 7 and 11am: elephants, deer, peacocks
Afternoon at Banasura Sagar dam, then a spice plantation walk at sunset
Good to know: The 7 to 11am safari slot sees the most wildlife. Afternoon slots are quieter but hotter, so carry water.
Morning coffee plantation walk with a tasting, lunch in Kalpetta, drive back to Calicut for your flight
Good to know: Keep 4 hours between Kalpetta and a Calicut flight. The ghat road slows down behind trucks and buses.
Chembra Peak permits are capped daily and trails can close on short notice during heavy rain. Put the trek on Day 2 so you have a buffer day to shift it, and carry more water than you think you need: there are no shops on the trail.
