What to Buy in Kerala and What It Costs

The best things to buy in Kerala are spices, Nendran banana chips fried in coconut oil, a kasavu saree or mundu, and one serious handicraft such as a Kathakali mask or an Aranmula metal mirror. Budget with real prices: banana chips cost Rs 239 for 200 g, black pepper is listed from Rs 154 for a small pack, a basic cotton kasavu saree starts near Rs 700, and small Kathakali masks start near Rs 280. Below are verified October 2026 prices for each category, where to buy each thing, and three sample shopping budgets.

Spices: the one purchase nobody regrets

Kerala grows the spices other states season with: green cardamom from Idukki, black pepper from Wayanad and the coast, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg and mace. Buy whole spices, not ground powders: they keep their flavour for months and you can see what you are paying for. The Mattancherry and Jew Town warehouses in Kochi are the classic place to buy, and shops in Thekkady, Kumily and Munnar sell the same hill produce near where it grows. Our Kochi 1 day itinerary covers Mattancherry between sightseeing stops.

One price reality check first. Cardamom is genuinely expensive: licensed auctions under the Spices Board averaged Rs 3,050 to Rs 3,057 per kg on 17 October 2026, with top lots at Rs 3,734 to Rs 3,831 per kg. That is the bulk wholesale price, before grading, packing and retail margins, so a small tourist pack always costs far more per gram. Very cheap cardamom is old or mixed stock.

Banana chips and food gifts

Kerala banana chips are made from Nendran plantains, sliced thin and fried in coconut oil with salt and turmeric. They are the easiest gift in this guide: light and liked by almost everyone. One caution from the pack itself: shelf life is about four weeks, so buy chips in the last two days of your trip.

Kasavu sarees, mundus and handloom

The kasavu saree is Kerala in cloth form: off-white cotton or silk with a gold zari border, worn at Onam, weddings and temple visits. Authentic handloom weaving is centred in three GI-tagged clusters: Balaramapuram, Chendamangalam and Kuthampully. Prices typically range from Rs 700 for a basic cotton kasavu saree to Rs 5,000 or more for premium tissue and soft silk versions. Shopping guides put handloom textiles overall, including the mundu worn by men, at Rs 500 to Rs 5,000.

To buy a real one: look for the Handloom Mark, feel for the slight irregularity of a hand weave, and check the border is woven zari, not printed gold. Government emporiums and weaver cooperatives are the safest first stop: prices are fixed and tag descriptions are reliable.

Handicrafts: Kathakali masks, Aranmula mirrors and coir

HandicraftPriceNote
Kathakali mask, small printed, about 12 inchFrom Rs 280Marketplace listings from Ernakulam sellers
Kathakali mask, wood, about 11 inchRs 650Wall hanging size for most homes
Kathakali mask, fibre, 1 ftRs 1,0002 to 2.5 ft pieces listed at Rs 3,648 to Rs 3,900
Kathakali mask, large, about 3.5 ftRs 12,000Statement pieces; shipping costs extra
Aranmula kannadi, 8 inchRs 2,699Handmade metal alloy mirror; stand versions at Rs 7,500
Coir mats, bags and runnersRs 300 to Rs 2,000By size and design

The Aranmula kannadi is not glass: it is a polished metal alloy mirror made by hand in Aranmula, counted among the auspicious ashtamangalyam items. If the budget allows one heirloom purchase, this and a genuine handloom kasavu are the two strongest candidates.

Ayurvedic products

Small Ayurvedic oils, scrubs and herbal preparations are listed across shopping guides at Rs 100 to Rs 1,000. Buy sealed, branded bottles with a printed ingredient list, batch number and expiry date. Packing and carrying tips

  1. Buy spices and chips in the last two days of the trip, when both are freshest.
  2. Keep spice packs sealed in checked baggage, each inside a zip bag, so a split pack cannot stain the suitcase.
  3. Coconut oil goes in checked baggage only, bottle taped shut and bagged twice.
  4. Carry a Kathakali mask or an Aranmula mirror in hand baggage, wrapped.
  5. Flying internationally, check your home country customs rules first. Sealed, labelled packs clear far more easily than loose market scoops.
Honest caveat: prices here were checked in October 2026 against named Kerala retailers, marketplaces and Spices Board auction results. Market prices move, cardamom fastest of all. Treat every figure as a planning range, and check big purchases in two shops before paying.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most famous thing to buy in Kerala?

Spices, above all cardamom and black pepper, followed by the kasavu saree. Both are specific to Kerala: the spices grow here, and the saree is woven here.

How much should I budget for shopping in Kerala?

Rs 831 covers a solid food gift basket at listed prices, Rs 1,438 adds a basic kasavu saree and premium cardamom, and an Aranmula mirror with a wooden Kathakali mask comes to Rs 3,349.

Where is the best place to buy spices in Kerala?

Mattancherry and Jew Town in Kochi for choice, and Thekkady, Kumily and Munnar for hill spices near the source. Compare two or three shops, buy whole spices in sealed packs, and check the packing date.

How do I know a kasavu saree is authentic?

Look for the Handloom Mark, a slightly irregular handwoven texture, and a woven zari border rather than a printed one. Buy from government emporiums or weaver cooperatives, and be wary of pure silk claims at cotton prices.

Are banana chips a good gift to carry home?

Yes, with one timing rule: shelf life is about four weeks, so buy them at the end of the trip. A 200 g pack at Rs 239 is the standard gift size.

Can I take spices and coconut oil on a flight?

Domestically, sealed spices and bottled oil travel fine in checked baggage, bagged against leaks. Internationally, rules differ by country, so check your destination customs list before buying and keep everything commercially packed and labelled.
