One day in Kozhikode is enough for the city core plus one beach, if you keep the order tight: Tali Temple and Mananchira Square in the morning, a Malabar biryani lunch and SM Street in the middle of the day, then Kappad Beach, about 16 km north, for the late afternoon. The paid sights are cheap: museums list entry at Rs 20 to Rs 40 per person and Kozhikkodan halwa is Rs 80 to Rs 180 per kg, so the day is decided by transport, with a full-day sedan sightseeing cab listed from Rs 2,999 for 8 to 9 hours.

Kozhikode, still widely called Calicut, is the old Malabar Coast spice port, and its sights split into two clusters. The first is walkable in the centre: Mananchira Square, Tali Temple, SM Street and the East Hill museums. The second is the coast, where one-day plans go wrong: Kappad to the north and Beypore to the south are in opposite directions, so pick one. Kappad for history, Beypore for the wooden uru shipyards.
Figures checked in October 2026. The cab row is a published one-day Calicut sightseeing tariff for an 8 to 9 hour package covering Tali Temple, the East Hill museums, Kappad, Kozhikode Beach, Sarovaram and Beypore, with parking, tolls and driver allowance listed as included and entry fees and meals listed as excluded. Entry fees are the per-person prices listed for those sights. Food bands are the per-person per-day ranges from our Kerala food guide. The autos and buses row is a planning allowance, not a quoted fare.
| Item (2 people, 1 day, no stay) | By autos and buses | By full-day cab |
|---|---|---|
| Local transport | Rs 600 to Rs 900 allowance, including the Kappad return trip | Rs 2,999 sedan, Rs 3,499 Ertiga, Rs 3,999 Innova |
| Entry: Pazhassi Raja Museum Rs 20, Krishna Menon Museum Rs 40, Sarovaram Bio Park Rs 30, per person | Rs 180 for 2, if you do all three | Rs 180 for 2, if you do all three |
| Food, 1 day | Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 (local restaurants) | Rs 1,600 to Rs 2,400 (mid-range restaurants) |
| Halwa to take home, 1 kg | Rs 80 to Rs 180 | Rs 80 to Rs 180 |
| Total for the day | About Rs 1,900 to Rs 2,800 | About Rs 4,900 to Rs 5,800 |
The beaches, Mananchira, Tali Temple and SM Street list no entry fee, so a traveller who walks the centre and buses to Kappad can do the day for well under the cab column. What the cab buys is the Kappad leg and the museums without waiting for buses in the heat.
The Beypore swap: If shipbuilding interests you more than the 1498 landing, replace Kappad with Beypore, about 10 km south of the centre, where wooden uru vessels are still built. Keep it a straight swap: doing both in one afternoon means spending it crossing the city.
Kozhikode is the usual gateway to Wayanad: it is the nearest major railhead, and the road onward runs via NH766 through the Thamarassery Churam, the ghat section with 9 hairpin bends. Kalpetta, the first Wayanad town most travellers use, is about 85 km away, listed at about 2 hours 40 minutes to 3.5 hours depending on traffic, weather and your exact destination in Wayanad. One-way taxi listings for Kozhikode to Wayanad typically sit around Rs 2,500 to Rs 4,500, with some booking sites listing fares starting lower, from about Rs 2,170, depending on car type and destination. KSRTC and private buses run the same route for much less.
Do not add Wayanad sightseeing to the end of this day: you would reach the ghats tired and in the dark. The pattern that works is this city day, a night in Kozhikode, an early start up the churam next morning, then the plan in our Wayanad 2 day itinerary.
October to March is the comfortable window for a walking-heavy city day, matching the statewide picture in our best time to visit Kerala, month by month. In monsoon the centre is still doable, as the museums, lunch and SM Street are under cover, but cut the beaches first if rain is heavy. In summer, start earlier and leave Kappad to late afternoon, as this itinerary already does.
Yes, for the city-centre sights, SM Street food and shopping, and one beach excursion to Kappad or Beypore. It is not enough for both beach directions plus the museums without rushing, and it does not include Wayanad, which needs its own days after the 85 km ghat drive.
Kappad, about 16 km from Kozhikode town, is where a plaque marks Vasco da Gama's landing on 27 May 1498, per Kerala Tourism. Entry is free, and most visitors spend about an hour walking the beach and the rocky headland.
Kerala Tourism puts Kozhikkodan halwa typically at Rs 80 to Rs 180 per kg, depending on flavour and ingredients. It is made with coconut oil, keeps without refrigeration, and is the one food souvenir to buy here rather than anywhere else in Kerala.
Make lunch the main meal: Malabar biryani or a seafood meal in the centre, beach and street snacks if you pass them, and halwa from SM Street to take home. Budget Rs 500 to Rs 750 per person for the day eating locally, or Rs 800 to Rs 1,200 at mid-range restaurants, per our food guide ranges.
Not sensibly. Kozhikode to Kalpetta alone is about 85 km and roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours each way through the Thamarassery Churam ghat. Spend the day in Kozhikode, sleep there, and start for Wayanad early the next morning.
The listings for the Pazhassi Raja Museum and the Krishna Menon Museum at East Hill both show Monday as closed. On a Monday, swap that slot for Sarovaram Bio Park, listed as open daily from 9 am, and keep the rest of the day unchanged.
