How to Reach Wayanad from Kochi and Calicut Airport

Wayanad has no airport and no railway station, so every trip ends with the same ghat road up from Kozhikode. From Kochi, Kalpetta is about 268 km away: a direct taxi takes about 6.5 to 7.5 hours with a sedan from Rs 5,511 plus taxes, a direct KSRTC bus costs from about Rs 303, and train to Kozhikode plus a bus or cab is often the calmest option. If you are flying in, land at Calicut airport (CCJ) instead: only about 84 to 97 km from Kalpetta, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours by taxi.

Every route here converges on one road: Kozhikode to Thamarassery, then up the Thamarassery Churam, the ghat section with 9 hairpin bends, past Lakkidi and Vythiri to Kalpetta. That climb is only about 25 km, but it decides your timing and comfort. Aim to start it in daylight and finish before dinner.

All the routes compared

Figures checked in October 2026 from current cab listings, bus listings and train timetables. Distances are to Kalpetta, the first main Wayanad town on this route and the base used in our Wayanad 2 day itinerary.

One warning on times: some cab sites list Kochi to Wayanad at under 4.5 hours. That does not survive Kozhikode traffic plus a loaded ghat climb. The bus timetables for the same road, at about 6 to 7.5 hours, are the more honest guide.

From Kochi by road: direct taxi or direct bus

The road route runs north on the highway to Kozhikode, then turns inland at Thamarassery for the climb. It is a full travel day, so the taxi versus bus choice is mostly about luggage, group size and motion sickness, not speed: both take roughly the same time.

Kochi to Wayanad one-way taxi, by car typeListed fare (before taxes)
Hatchback (4 seats)From Rs 5,392
Sedan (4 seats)From Rs 5,511
SUV, Ertiga type (6 seats)From Rs 7,955
Innova Crysta (6 seats)From Rs 10,608

Those are one booking site's starting fares for about 266 to 268 km included, with taxes on top. Other operators quote higher all-inclusive prices for the same trip, so confirm in writing whether tolls, driver allowance and taxes are included before comparing quotes.

By bus, KSRTC runs Ernakulam to Wayanad services through the day and night, with Super Fast fares listed from about Rs 303 to Rs 401 and times around 6 hours 20 minutes to 7 hours 40 minutes. Night buses save a hotel night but drop you at Kalpetta in the small hours, so only take one if your stay has confirmed an early check-in.

From Kochi by train plus road: the calm option

There is no train into Wayanad, but the Ernakulam to Kozhikode leg replaces 190 km of highway with a seat you can walk around in. About 17 to 19 trains a day cover the route.

  1. Take the train from Ernakulam to Kozhikode (CLT). The fastest is the Vande Bharat (20634), listed at 2 hrs 43 mins, departing 08:20 and arriving 11:03. Jan Shatabdi services take about 3 hrs 35 mins, and the cheapest listed option is Rs 100 at 3 hrs 47 mins. Take a faster morning train to finish the ghat climb by afternoon.
  2. Change at Kozhikode. The KSRTC bus stand is a short auto ride from the station. Buses to Kalpetta run every 30 to 60 minutes at Rs 100 to Rs 150 per person, and taxis wait outside the station.
  3. Climb to your Wayanad town. From Kozhikode station it is 70 to 80 km and about 2.5 hours to Kalpetta, 90 to 100 km and about 3 hours to Sultan Bathery, and 80 to 90 km and about 3 hours to Mananthavady. Door-to-door from Kochi: roughly 5.5 to 7 hours including the change.

From Calicut airport (CCJ, Karipur)

If Wayanad is your first stop in Kerala, this is the airport to book, not Kochi. Calicut International Airport at Karipur sits south of Kozhikode city, and airport taxis join the Thamarassery road without crossing the whole city. Route guides put it at 70 to 95 km and about 2.5 hours from Kalpetta, 100 to 120 km and about 3 hours from Sultan Bathery, and about 120 km from Mananthavady. Cab listings checked in October 2026 put a sedan to Wayanad from Rs 2,694 plus taxes on one site and from Rs 3,747 on another, with Kalpetta the cheapest drop.

On a budget from the airport, there is no direct airport to Wayanad bus in the listings checked: get into Kozhikode city first, then take the frequent KSRTC bus up the ghat at Rs 100 to Rs 150. That adds a change and about an hour. Travellers pairing the two districts often give Kozhikode city a day first, following our Kozhikode 1 day itinerary, then climb the next morning.

The ghat climb and your Wayanad town

From Adivaram, at the foot of the hills, the road climbs through 9 hairpin bends to Lakkidi, the gateway viewpoint, then runs through Vythiri to Kalpetta. If anyone gets motion sick, this half hour is where it happens: sit in front, avoid screens, and keep the heavy meal for after the climb. In monsoon and mist the 2.5 hour Kozhikode to Kalpetta run can stretch past 3.5 hours. Your drop town also changes every number above: Kalpetta is the first town and transport hub, Sultan Bathery is about 20 to 25 km further east, and Mananthavady is a separate northern base, better reached from Kannur side, a contrast we cover in Munnar vs Wayanad.

Which option should you pick?

Flying in for Wayanad only: land at Calicut airport and take a taxi. Already in Kochi with a group or heavy luggage: take the direct taxi and split it. Solo or on a tight budget: train plus bus at roughly Rs 200 to Rs 250 in fares, or the direct KSRTC bus from about Rs 303 with no change. Prone to motion sickness: maximise the train leg, because the only winding road left is the final climb.

FAQ

Does Wayanad have an airport or a railway station?

No. The nearest airport for most visitors is Calicut International Airport (CCJ) at Karipur, and the nearest major railway station is Kozhikode (CLT), 70 to 80 km from Kalpetta. Every arrival finishes by road up the Thamarassery Churam.

How long does Kochi to Wayanad really take?

Plan on 6.5 to 7.5 hours by taxi or direct bus for the roughly 268 km to Kalpetta. Listings promising under 4.5 hours ignore Kozhikode traffic and the ghat climb.

What is the cheapest way to reach Wayanad from Kochi?

Train plus bus: Ernakulam to Kozhikode by train from Rs 100, then a KSRTC bus to Kalpetta at Rs 100 to Rs 150, roughly Rs 200 to Rs 250 in fares. A direct KSRTC bus from about Rs 303 avoids the change.

Should I fly to Kochi or Calicut for Wayanad?

Calicut, if Wayanad is your first or only hill stop: the airport is about 84 to 97 km from Kalpetta versus 268 km by road from Kochi. Fly to Kochi only if your trip starts there and reaches Wayanad at the end.

Can I reach Wayanad from Kochi and sightsee the same day?

Not realistically. Even the fastest route lands you in Kalpetta by mid to late afternoon. Keep arrival day for your stay and the nearest viewpoint, and start sightseeing the next morning.

Is it okay to climb the Thamarassery Churam at night?

Buses and taxis do run the route in the evening, but first-timers should finish the 9 hairpin bends in daylight: the bends are tight, mist is common after dark, and you would miss the Lakkidi viewpoint. Leave Kozhikode by mid afternoon at the latest.

Honest caveat: prices are planning figures checked in October 2026 from current cab, KSRTC bus and train timetable listings, not quotes. Cab fares are starting prices before taxes on some sites and all-inclusive on others, so confirm inclusions in writing. Train times and the Rs 100 cheapest fare are for specific services and change with the timetable. Ghat times stretch in rain, mist and holiday traffic. Confirm each price before you pay, and cost the wider trip in the trip budget planner.
