Athirappilly Day Trip from Kochi Cost

An Athirappilly day trip from Kochi costs as little as the bus fare via Chalakudy plus Rs 50 entry per Indian adult, or from about Rs 2,100 for a one-way sedan cab before the return leg. The falls are about 70 km from Kochi, open 8 AM to 6 PM, and one ticket also covers Vazhachal on the same day.

Quick answer: what the day costs

Entry is not the expensive part. Transport is. For two Indian adults, known costs are Rs 100 for entry and Rs 30 for a light vehicle by car, plus transport and food. A one-way sedan cab is listed from about Rs 2,078 to Rs 2,100, so a cab that also brings you back will cost more. The bus via Chalakudy is far cheaper, but adds a change and waiting time on the final 30 km.

KSRTC bus via ChalakudyKochi to Chalakudy listed from Rs 82 per person, plus the onward local bus or auto fare for the last stretchCheapest. No direct bus to the falls, so allow extra time for the change at Chalakudy
Train to Chalakudy, then bus or taxiTrain fare varies by class, plus onward fare from Chalakudy station, about 30 km from the fallsUseful if you are already using trains. You still need road transport for the final leg

Own or hired car for the dayFuel or hire charge varies, plus Rs 30 light vehicle entryMost flexible for Vazhachal and an early start. Fill fuel in the city or at Chalakudy

Those cab figures are starting prices from operator listings checked in October 2026, not a fixed tariff. Pickup point, car type, date and whether the driver waits all change the final quote, so get the total in writing before you set off.

Entry fees and timings

Athirappilly is in Thrissur district, at the entrance to the Sholayar forest ranges, where the Chalakudy River drops about 80 feet. Kerala Tourism describes it as the largest waterfall in Kerala. The site is managed as an ecotourism centre, and the current fee list on the Vazhachal Forest Division booking site is:

TicketFeeNotes
Indian adultRs 50One ticket covers Athirappilly and Vazhachal on the same day. Keep it with you
Child, 5 to 12 yearsRs 15
StudentRs 10Carry student ID
Foreign visitorRs 200
CameraRs 60Video camera Rs 300
Two or three wheelerRs 10Light vehicle, such as a car, Rs 30

Visiting hours are 8 AM to 6 PM every day, with ticket sales ending earlier, around 5 PM in current listings. Passes can be booked online in advance through the forest division booking site, and you should carry original government ID and your booking confirmation if you book that way. If you buy at the counter, arrive early on weekends and holidays: parking and the ticket queue fill by mid-morning.

How to get there from Kochi

The usual road route runs north from Kochi through Aluva and Angamaly to Chalakudy, then east to Athirappilly. Sources put the distance at roughly 70 to 75 km depending on where in Kochi you start, and the drive at about 1.5 to 2 hours in normal traffic. Weekend traffic on the highway can stretch that, which is why an early start matters more than any other choice on this trip.

By bus, take a KSRTC bus toward Chalakudy first. There is no direct connection all the way to the falls, so from Chalakudy you change to a local bus, taxi or auto for the final stretch. By train, Chalakudy is also the nearest station, about 30 km west of the falls, with the same onward road leg. If you are flying in, Cochin International Airport is north of the city and closer to this route than Fort Kochi is, so a cab from the airport saves backtracking. For a wider first day in the city before or after this trip, see our Kochi 1 day itinerary and the Kochi destination guide.

A timetable that works

1. Leave Kochi by 7 AM. You want to reach the gate soon after the 8 AM opening, before the crowds and the heat build.

2. Stop for breakfast around Angamaly or Chalakudy rather than at the falls, and fill fuel there if you are driving.

3. Spend about 2 to 3 hours at Athirappilly: the top viewpoint first for the wide view, then the stepped path down toward the base if it is open and you are fit for the climb back up.

4. Drive the short stretch, under 5 km, to Vazhachal on the same ticket. Here the river runs over a wide bed of rocks rather than dropping in one fall. Stay on the bank and behind barriers: the rocks are slippery.

5. Have lunch on the way back toward Chalakudy, then aim to be out of the forest stretch by mid-afternoon and back in Kochi by early evening.

That order uses the ticket while it is valid that day, and avoids the forest road after dark.

What you will see, and what can change on the day

October is a strong month for this trip: the monsoon has eased but the river still carries plenty of water. In the wettest weeks the falls are at their most powerful, but steps get slippery and staff may close the lower viewpoint or hold visitors back for safety. On heavy rain days the centres can close entirely at short notice, so check the booking site or check with the forest office on the morning you travel if rain has been heavy upstream.

At the top, a paved path leads to the main viewpoint. The path down is steep and uneven, and is a poor idea for anyone with serious knee, heart or breathing trouble. Wear shoes with grip, carry water, and expect spray near the base. Do not feed monkeys, and take plastic back out with you.

Charpa Falls, a seasonal roadside fall, and Thumboormuzhy, known for its dam and butterfly garden, are optional add-ons only if you started early.

Tips that save money and time

Go on a weekday if you can: the falls, parking and road are calmer. Book entry online when you know your date, and keep confirmation and ID ready. Share a cab across three or four people and the per-person cost falls sharply, without the change at Chalakudy. Price the rest of your route with the trip budget planner, and see our Kochi to Munnar taxi fare vs bus cost guide if Munnar is next.

FAQ

How many hours are enough at Athirappilly Falls?

Two to three hours covers the top viewpoint and the walk down toward the base at a comfortable pace. Add about an hour for Vazhachal. As a day trip from Kochi, allow a full day once you include roughly 1.5 to 2 hours of driving each way.

Does one ticket really cover Vazhachal too?

Yes, current listings say the same day ticket is used for both Athirappilly and Vazhachal. Keep the ticket after you leave Athirappilly and show it again at Vazhachal, under 5 km away.

Can I do this trip without a car?

Yes. Go by KSRTC bus or train to Chalakudy, then take a local bus, taxi or auto for the final 30 km or so. It is the cheapest way to do the trip, but start earlier than the cab timetable above because the change at Chalakudy adds waiting time.

What is the best time to visit?

For water flow with easier walking, October to February is the reliable window, and the first hours after the 8 AM opening are best for photos and smaller crowds. In peak monsoon the falls are most dramatic, but closures and slippery paths are more likely.

Is the walk to the base suitable for children and older visitors?

The top viewpoint suits most visitors. The path to the base is steep and can be slippery, so judge it on the day, hold handrails, and skip it for anyone with mobility, heart or breathing difficulties. There is no need to do the base walk to justify the trip: the top view is the classic one.

Honest caveat: entry fees above are from the Vazhachal Forest Division booking list checked in October 2026, and cab figures are operator starting prices, not quotes. Forest staff can close viewpoints or the whole centre in heavy rain, so confirm fees, timings and closures on the day you travel.
