Kochi is where most Kerala trips start and many end. Fort Kochi and Mattancherry pack fishing nets, colonial streets, a centuries-old synagogue lane, and spice warehouses into one very walkable corner of the city.
Walk the Fort Kochi waterfront at sunset for the Chinese fishing nets, then St. Francis Church and the Dutch cemetery. Mattancherry has the Dutch Palace, the Paradesi Synagogue lane, and working spice warehouses. Marine Drive is the city's evening promenade. Book an evening Kathakali or Kalaripayattu show: they run daily in season.
Kochi International Airport is the main gateway to Kerala. The city is a major rail hub, and ferries connect Fort Kochi, Mattancherry, and the mainland for a few rupees.
October to March is the sweet spot. The Kochi-Muziris Biennale, India's largest contemporary art exhibition, runs December to March in alternating years and is worth timing a trip around.
A Kerala sadhya (banana-leaf feast) at least once, appam and stew for breakfast, and grilled seafood near the fishing nets. Mattancherry's old cafes do excellent filter coffee. See our 4-day Kochi and Kovalam itinerary for a day-by-day plan that starts here.
