Munnar to Alleppey, 5 Days

Two nights in the tea hills, then three days winding down onto the backwaters. This is the single most common first-trip route in Kerala, and for good reason: it covers hills and water without too much driving.

Tea plantations in Munnar, Kerala
  • Arrive from Kochi (about 4 hours by road), settle in, evening at leisure
  • Tea estate walk and museum, Top Station viewpoint at sunset
  • Spice garden visit and, if the weather holds, a short trek toward Kolukkumalai

Good to know: Munnar sits around 1,600m, so evenings stay cool all year. Pack a light jacket even if you are arriving from the coast in summer.

  • Drive from Munnar to Alleppey (around 5 hours), stopping at a waterfall en route

Good to know: Start by 9am. The 5-hour hill drive plus boarding formalities means a late start can eat into the houseboat's afternoon cruise window.

  • Board a houseboat by early afternoon, cruise through the backwaters overnight
  • Morning canoe ride through the narrower canals, village walk, disembark by 9am

Good to know: Houseboats usually cruise from around noon to 5pm and halt overnight. The morning canoe ride through the narrow canals is the quietest part of the trip, so do not sleep through it.

Road travel between Munnar and Alleppey runs through hill roads that can be slow after heavy rain. Build in a buffer day if you are traveling in July or August.
