Trivandrum 2 Day Itinerary

Two days in Trivandrum work best split in two: Day 1 in the city for Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, Kuthiramalika Palace, and the Napier Museum, and Day 2 at Kovalam for the beach and the Vizhinjam lighthouse, about 16 km south. Main paid entries add up to about Rs 110 per Indian adult. One rule shapes the plan: the museum, palace, and lighthouse all close on Mondays.

Day 1: City and heritagePadmanabhaswamy Temple darshan, then Kuthiramalika Palace next doorNapier Museum, Sree Chitra Art Gallery, and the zoo in the same campusShanghumukham Beach or an early night
Day 2: Kovalam coastDrive to Kovalam, Lighthouse Beach, climb the Vizhinjam lighthouseBeach time, Hawa Beach, seafood lunchSunset at Kovalam, return to the city

Stay near East Fort or Thampanoor for this plan. You walk to the temple and palace on Day 1 and make only one longer drive, to Kovalam on Day 2.

Vizhinjam Lighthouse, KovalamRs 20Rs 10 for children and senior citizens in published listingsSplit hours, morning and afternoon, closed on Mondays. Camera about Rs 10

Entry only, Kuthiramalika Rs 70 plus Napier Museum Rs 20 plus the lighthouse Rs 20 equals Rs 110 per Indian adult. Add a special darshan ticket at Rs 150 and the ticket total is Rs 260. The zoo sits inside the museum campus and is ticketed separately at its gate, so carry small cash if you add it. Palace and museum listings do not all agree on older rates, so treat the counter price on the day as final.

Honest caveat: Padmanabhaswamy Temple entry is for Hindus only, phones and cameras are not allowed inside, and the dress code is strict. Men wear a mundu or dhoti with no shirt, and women wear a saree, set-mundu, or a long skirt or salwar with a dupatta. See our full Kerala temple dress code guide for tourists before you go. Dhotis and sarees can be bought or hired near East Fort if you arrive without them.

Day 1: Temple, palace, and museum

  1. Start with darshan, early. Aim for the 6:30 AM or the 8:30 AM slot. Leave phones and bags at the cloakroom and carry photo ID. By late morning the queue is longer, and the temple then closes for its midday break.
  2. Walk to Kuthiramalika Palace. The palace stands right beside the temple at East Fort, so there is no drive between the two. Allow about an hour for the guided walk through the rooms open to visitors.
  3. Lunch on a banana leaf. Eat a Kerala sadhya or a simple meals lunch near East Fort or MG Road, and rest through the midday heat.
  4. Spend the afternoon in the museum campus. The Napier Museum opens at 10:00 AM and closes at 4:45 PM, and on Wednesdays it opens only at 1:00 PM. Inside are bronze idols, ivory carvings, ornaments, and a temple chariot. The Sree Chitra Art Gallery in the same grounds holds paintings by Raja Ravi Varma. With children, add the zoo in the same campus and drop the gallery instead of rushing both.
  5. End at Shanghumukham Beach, if you have energy left. Go for sunset and a snack, not for a swim, and head back early before the Kovalam day.

Day 2: Kovalam and the lighthouse

  1. Leave the city by about 8:30 AM. Kovalam is about 16 km south. A cab or auto ride gets you to Lighthouse Beach before the midday heat and before the lighthouse morning session ends.
  2. Climb the Vizhinjam lighthouse first. The red and white lighthouse above Lighthouse Beach is 36 metres tall, and the top gives the clearest view of the three Kovalam bays. It closes on Mondays, so do it before you settle on the sand.
  3. Then take the beach slowly. Lighthouse Beach is the busiest bay, Hawa Beach is quieter, and Samudra Beach is the calmest for a walk. Swim only where lifeguards are present: this coast has strong currents outside the guarded stretches.
  4. Eat seafood for lunch, facing the sea. The cafes along Lighthouse Beach serve fresh fish and prawns priced by catch and size. Confirm the price for the exact fish before it is cooked, not after.
  5. Stay for sunset or head back. Sunset is the natural end. If your train or flight is that evening, leave Kovalam with a clear buffer for city traffic.

Should you add Poovar on Day 2?

Poovar, where backwaters meet the sea about 30 km south, is often sold as a Kovalam add-on. In two days, adding it means cutting Kovalam short. Do it only if backwaters matter more than beach time. With a third day, Poovar makes a relaxed half-day trip: see how many days are enough for a Kerala first trip.

Three mistakes that break this itinerary

Arriving on a Monday without swapping the days. All three close on Mondays. If Day 1 is a Monday, swap the days and accept a beach day without the lighthouse climb.

Planning the temple for midday. Darshan stops for a long break from about noon until the evening session. A midday arrival wastes the best hours and leaves you waiting at East Fort in the heat.

Trying to do the zoo, both galleries, and Kovalam properly in one day. The museum campus alone can take half a day. That is the point of this plan: one day for the city, one for the coast.

FAQ

Is 2 days enough for Trivandrum? Yes, for the main sights: the temple, palace, and museum campus in one day, and Kovalam in the second. It is not enough if you also want Poovar, Ponmudi, or a slow beach stay. Add a third day for any of those.

What is the best area to stay in Trivandrum for 2 days? The city centre, around Thampanoor and East Fort, suits this itinerary best: the temple and palace are close, the railway station is at Thampanoor, and Kovalam is a single drive away. Stay at Kovalam only if the beach matters more than an early darshan.

Can non-Hindus enter Padmanabhaswamy Temple? No. Entry inside is for Hindus only, and the dress code and no-phones rule are enforced. Non-Hindu visitors can see the gopuram and the temple tank area from outside and should plan the palace and museum as their Day 1 focus instead.

How far is Kovalam from Trivandrum city? About 16 km south of the city centre. Allow roughly 30 to 45 minutes by road depending on traffic, and more at peak hours.

Which day should I visit the Napier Museum? Any day except Monday, and not on a Wednesday morning, when it opens only at 1:00 PM. A weekday afternoon is quieter than a weekend.

When is the best time of year for this itinerary? October to February is the most comfortable window for combining temple queues, museum walking, and the beach. See our best time to visit Kerala month by month for the trade-offs in other months.
