For most families, Alleppey is the better choice: it has far more 2 and 3-bedroom houseboats, lower starting prices, and narrow canals with village life that keeps children watching. Kumarakom is better only if your family prefers a quiet lakeside resort, open Vembanad Lake views, and a short cruise added on. Last updated: October 2026.
Pick Alleppey for the houseboat night itself. Children usually stay engaged longer there because the route keeps changing: narrow canals, paddy fields, village homes, ducks, fishermen, and other boats pass close to the deck. Pick Kumarakom if the houseboat is not the main event and your family would rather spend most of the time at a resort, with space to walk, a pool, and a calmer lake setting. Many families with 2 backwater nights do both: one night on a houseboat in Alleppey, then one night at a resort in Kumarakom.
This is a different question from the couples version. For couples, quiet and privacy can be worth a premium. For families, boat size, price per family, food flexibility, and how much there is to look at usually matter more. See also our Kumarakom vs Alleppey guide for couples.
| Factor | Alleppey | Kumarakom |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | First houseboat trip, kids who need variety, larger families | Quiet resort stay, birdwatching, grandparents who want downtime |
| Houseboat choice | Largest fleet, many 2, 3 and larger bedroom boats | Smaller fleet, mostly premium and luxury leaning |
| Scenery for kids | Narrow canals, villages, paddy fields close up | Wide open Vembanad Lake, sunsets, birdlife |
| On-land option | Town stays and budget hotels | Lakeside resorts with gardens and pools |
| Nearest railway station | Alappuzha, in town | Kottayam, about 15 to 16 km away |
| Crowds | Busier, especially in peak season | Quieter and more spread out |
Houseboats are priced per boat, not per person, which is why Alleppey helps families: one 2-bedroom boat can cover parents and children together. The table below uses a published 2026 operator tariff for Alleppey overnight cruises, check-in 12 noon to check-out 9 am the next day, with welcome drink, lunch, evening tea and snacks, dinner, and breakfast included. These are starting rates, and the operator notes that peak holiday rates can rise sharply, so confirm your exact date in writing.
| Boat size | Deluxe | Premium | Luxury |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 bedroom (2 people) | Rs 10,000 | Rs 14,000 | Rs 25,000 |
| 2 bedrooms (4 people) | Rs 14,000 | Rs 20,000 | Rs 35,000 |
| 3 bedrooms (6 people) | Rs 18,000 | Rs 26,000 | Rs 42,000 |
| Extra person with meals | Rs 1,000 | Rs 1,500 | Rs 3,000 |
Kumarakom does not offer the same depth of budget and mid-range family boats. Sources comparing the two consistently describe Kumarakom boats and resorts as skewing premium, with fewer operators and fewer budget choices. We are not publishing a single Kumarakom family rate here because we did not find a comparable public per-boat tariff table for Kumarakom from an operator for this update. Treat any Kumarakom quote as boat-specific and compare it, like for like, against the Alleppey table above: same bedrooms, same meals, same AC hours.
For a wider family budget, see our Kerala trip cost for a family of 4 for 5 days.
On the Alleppey tariff we verified, Deluxe boats run bedroom AC only at night, listed as 9 pm to 6 am, while Premium and Luxury boats offer full-time AC. With young children who nap in the afternoon, that difference matters more than polished interiors. Ask which areas the AC covers, because some boats cool the bedroom and living area only one at a time.
Food is cooked on board on a fixed Kerala-style menu on standard tariffs. Tell the operator before you pay about spice levels, vegetarian or Jain needs, allergies, and baby food. It is much easier to agree this in advance than to fix it once you have cast off. Carry snacks, medicines, and baby supplies with you: an overnight boat anchors away from shops in the evening, and boats do not cruise through the night.
A houseboat can work well for families, but choose the boat for safety, not just photos. Before booking, ask in writing about:
On board, keep children off the outer deck edges when the boat is moving, and agree a simple rule before boarding: no running on deck, and an adult is always with a child outside the cabin. For very young toddlers, a day cruise can be the safer, easier first try: you get the canals and lunch on board, and you sleep on land. Our houseboat booking checklist covers what to verify before paying an advance.
In Alleppey, the interest is mostly on the water and along the canals. Short stops and the changing route do most of the work, which suits a single overnight stay. There is less reason to plan a long list of land attractions for that one day.
In Kumarakom, plan around the lake and nature. The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is the headline land visit, best early in the morning and especially rewarding in the main migratory months from around October to February. Resort stays also give children a pool and garden time that a houseboat cannot. If that slower pattern suits your family, look at our Kumarakom backwaters 3-day itinerary for how to structure it.
| Your family | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| First Kerala trip, one houseboat night, budget matters | Alleppey | Most choice, lowest starting prices, most engaging route |
| Two families or grandparents travelling together | Alleppey | Easier to find 3-bedroom and larger private boats |
| Children under 5, you are unsure about sleeping on water | Kumarakom resort plus a day cruise | You sleep on land, with resort space and facilities |
| Older children who like birds and nature | Kumarakom, or both | Bird sanctuary and open lake time add a real activity |
| You have 2 backwater nights | Both | One Alleppey houseboat night, then one Kumarakom resort night |
Licensed boats with a trained crew, life jackets, and proper railings are used by families every season. Your job is to verify those items for the specific boat you will board, ask for child-size life jackets, and supervise children on deck. If anything cannot be confirmed, choose a different boat.
For the houseboat itself, one night is the standard and complete format: board at noon, cruise in the afternoon, anchor overnight, and check out at 9 am after breakfast. Add a second night in the area only if you want a slower pace or a resort day, not because the cruise needs it.
Alleppey, in most like-for-like comparisons. A 2-bedroom Deluxe boat there starts at Rs 14,000 per night on the 2026 tariff we verified, with meals included. Kumarakom has fewer boats and a more premium resort base, so family quotes there usually start higher.
You can, but families should not rely on it in peak season. The better family boats and the larger sizes sell first. Book ahead, confirm AC hours, meals, boarding point, and safety items in writing, and keep the boat name or registration details.
Budget the boat itself first, using the table above, then add transfers and any resort night separately. That keeps the comparison honest. Use our trip budget planner to put the houseboat night into your full trip total.
