The train is the cheapest way from Kochi to Alleppey at Rs 15 per person in unreserved general class, a one-way sedan taxi starts at about Rs 1,600 with online drop services and rises to Rs 2,725 with a full-service operator, and KSRTC buses take about 1.5 to 2 hours. All three cover roughly 53 to 60 km, so the real choice is price per person, luggage, and whether you must reach a houseboat by noon.

Distance depends on your start and end points. Ernakulam to Alleppey town is about 53 km by road via NH 66, the railway covers 57 km from Ernakulam Jn (ERS) to Alleppey (ALLP), and a drop at the houseboat Finishing Point is closer to 60 km. That is why different sites quote 53 km and 60 km for the same trip: both can be right.
| Option | Cost | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train, unreserved passenger or MEMU | Rs 15 per person, general class | 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes station to station | Solo travellers, backpackers, anyone travelling light |
| KSRTC bus | Per-person fare by bus class (see the bus section below) | About 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on stops and NH 66 traffic | Budget travellers who want frequent departures without planning around a train time |
| Taxi, online one-way drop, sedan | About Rs 1,600 per car | About 1.5 to 2 hours door to door | Couples and small families who value a direct drop |
| Taxi, full-service local operator, sedan | Rs 2,725 per car | About 1.5 to 2 hours door to door | Travellers who want fuel, toll, parking, and driver charges included in one written quote |
| Taxi, Innova or Innova Crysta | Rs 3,575 to Rs 4,675 per car | About 1.5 to 2 hours door to door | Groups of 5 to 7 and families with large bags |
Read the taxi rows carefully. The cheaper figure is a one-way drop price from an online aggregator. The higher figure is from an established Kochi operator whose fare includes fuel, toll, parking, and driver allowances, but is calculated on 130 km of garage-to-garage distance, because the car returns to Kochi empty. They are pricing two different things, and that gap causes most of the confusion on this route.
For a sedan such as a Swift Dzire or Etios, expect quotes in this range in October 2026:
| Booking type | Sedan | Larger car | What is included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online one-way drop aggregator | About Rs 1,600 | About Rs 2,500 for an SUV | One-way drop fare listed online. Check toll and extra kilometres before you pay |
| Full-service Kochi operator | Rs 2,725 for a Swift Dzire or similar, 4 passengers | Rs 3,575 for a Toyota Innova, 6 passengers; Rs 4,675 for an Innova Crysta, 7 passengers | Fuel, toll, parking, and driver allowances, with 130 km garage-to-garage coverage |
Three questions close most fare surprises. Is the quote a one-way drop, or does the car bill its return to Kochi? Is the drop your hotel or the houseboat Finishing Point, which adds distance? What is the per-kilometre charge beyond the included distance? Get the answers in writing.
A taxi is priced per car, not per person, so for one person it is easily the most expensive choice. For four people splitting a Rs 1,600 to Rs 2,725 sedan, it works out to Rs 400 to Rs 681 per person, with a direct drop and no changes. That maths is when a cab starts to make sense.
Local trains are hard to beat on price. Unreserved passenger and MEMU services charge Rs 15 in general class for the full 57 km, and run daily. Two useful examples are:
| Train | Departs Ernakulam Jn | Arrives Alleppey | Time taken | Fare |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 66300 Ernakulam Jn to Alappuzha MEMU | 7:50 am | 9:25 am | 1 hour 35 minutes | Rs 15, general |
| 66313 Ernakulam to Alappuzha Passenger | 4:00 pm | 5:30 pm | 1 hour 30 minutes | Rs 15, general |
These local services stop at around 11 stations, including Cherthala and Mararikulam, which is why 57 km takes 90 minutes. Longer-distance express trains also run Ernakulam to Alappuzha in reserved classes at higher fares: check the live fare on IRCTC for your date, because reserved fares vary by train and class.
Two practical catches. Trains leave from Ernakulam, not Fort Kochi, so from Fort Kochi or Mattancherry you first need a ferry, bus, or auto ride to Ernakulam Jn. And Alleppey station is not the houseboat jetty: you still need a short auto or taxi ride at the other end, so agree that fare before you ride. Even with both hops, the train stays far cheaper than a cab for one or two people.
KSRTC buses for Alleppey leave from the Ernakulam KSRTC bus stand and from Vyttila Mobility Hub, and many are long-distance buses passing through Kochi on their way south via Alappuzha. Timing listings show departures across the whole day, with scheduled running times of roughly 1 hour 25 minutes to 2 hours depending on service type and stops. Aim for Super Fast services: they stop less than ordinary services on the same highway.
On price, be wary of any single neat figure for this hop. KSRTC charges by bus class, and ordinary, Super Fast, and air-conditioned services on the same road do not cost the same. KSRTC does not publish one fixed fare covering all of them, so check the fare for your specific service when you book online or at the stand. The bus is still a low per-person fare: far below a taxi for a solo traveller, and above the Rs 15 train fare once you use a faster or air-conditioned service.
The bus earns its place if you are near Vyttila and a Super Fast is leaving soon, or if your Alleppey stay is in town near the bus stand. It is the weakest choice with large suitcases, and its time stretches first when NH 66 traffic builds up.
Work backwards from boarding. Overnight houseboats check in around 12 noon, as our guide to Alleppey houseboat check-in and check-out times explains, so aim to arrive by late morning. On that test:
1. The 7:50 am MEMU, arriving at 9:25 am, is the best budget plan. It leaves buffer for the station-to-jetty ride and costs Rs 15.
2. A taxi leaving Kochi by about 9:30 am is the lowest-stress plan with luggage or children, and drops you at the boarding point itself.
3. A morning Super Fast bus also works, but leave earlier than you think: a traffic delay eats directly into your cruise time.
Before you travel, read our checklist on how to book an Alleppey houseboat so the boarding point name in your taxi or auto booking matches the one your boat operator gave you, and browse the Alleppey destination guide for what to do if you arrive early. You can price this leg inside your full trip in the trip budget planner.
About 53 km by road from Ernakulam to Alleppey town via NH 66, 57 km by rail from Ernakulam Jn to Alleppey, and about 60 km by road if your drop is the houseboat Finishing Point. The figure changes with your exact start and end points.
The train. Unreserved passenger and MEMU services from Ernakulam Jn to Alleppey cost Rs 15 in general class and take about 1 hour 30 minutes. You may still need a short ride at each end, from Fort Kochi to Ernakulam and from Alleppey station to your stay or jetty.
About Rs 1,600 for a sedan one-way drop through an online aggregator, and Rs 2,725 for a sedan from a full-service operator with fuel, toll, parking, and driver charges included on a garage-to-garage basis. An Innova is Rs 3,575 and an Innova Crysta Rs 4,675 with that operator.
Usually the train, on predictability. Local trains are scheduled at 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes and do not sit in NH 66 traffic. Buses are scheduled at roughly 1 hour 25 minutes to 2 hours, but traffic and stops decide the real time.
By taxi, yes, in one ride. By train or KSRTC bus, no service starts in Fort Kochi, so first cross to Ernakulam Jn or the KSRTC stand, or to Vyttila Mobility Hub for buses.
A taxi. It is the only door-to-door option, and for a group of three or four the per-person cost of a sedan drop is reasonable. Book the larger car if bags do not fit a sedan boot.
