A houseboat night is the single most oversold experience in Kerala. It can be magic, and it can be a hot box with no breeze. The comparison below covers cost, comfort, and when each option actually wins.
A standard houseboat cabin for two runs roughly ₹9,000 a night, with meals included on most boats. A decent hotel room in Alleppey runs ₹2,500 to ₹4,000, and food for two costs about ₹1,500 a day. Add a day cruise (₹5,000 to ₹9,000 for a small boat) to the hotel option and the two choices land surprisingly close. The houseboat is not the rip-off it first looks like, and the hotel is not the obvious bargain either.
You are here for the experience of sleeping on the water, not just the photos. Honeymooners and slow travelers get the most from it. Pick a smaller boat on the narrower canals over a big cruiser on the wide lake: the scenery is better and the water is quieter. All-inclusive meals mean you stop making decisions for a day, which some people genuinely enjoy.
You sleep hot. Houseboats dock in the evening, the engine shuts off, and air conditioning is usually limited to set hours, often around 9pm to 6am. If firm mattresses, hot showers on demand, and eating dinner in town matter to you, the hotel wins easily. It also wins on tight budgets: a hotel plus a 3-hour canoe ride through the canals costs well under half of a houseboat night.
Regulations require houseboats to dock by evening, so the cruising day is roughly 11am to 5pm. Smaller canal boats show you more village life; the big Vembanad cruisers show you more water. Ask about the AC hours and the generator policy before you book, and confirm whether the upper deck is accessible at night. On some boats, it is not.
