Getting Around Kochi Without a Car

Yes, you can see Kochi without hiring a car. The metro covers the mainland spine, the Water Metro ferries you to Fort Kochi for Rs 40, city buses cost a few rupees, and metered autos fill the gaps. A full day of public transport runs about Rs 100 to Rs 200 per person. The only real gap is Fort Kochi itself, which has no metro station, and late nights after the last train.

The Kochi Metro: the backbone of a no-car trip

Kochi Metro Line 1 runs 28 km from Aluva in the north to Thripunithura Terminal in the south, with 25 stations and no changes needed: it is a single line, so you cannot take a wrong branch. Trains run roughly 6 AM to 10 PM, with a later start on Sundays, every 8 to 15 minutes depending on the hour. For a visitor, three stations matter most. Aluva is the northern terminus and the closest station to Cochin International Airport, about 4 km away. MG Road and Maharaja's College serve the commercial heart of Ernakulam. Vyttila sits on the mobility hub where metro, long-distance buses and the Water Metro meet.

Fares run in six steps by station count, from Rs 10 for up to 2 stations to Rs 60 for the full line. The Kochi1 smart card shaves a little off every ride (Rs 9 for a Rs 10 ride) and works on the Water Metro too, so buy one if you are staying more than a day. Two example fares worth knowing: Aluva to MG Road costs Rs 50 and takes about 30 minutes over 15 stations, and Aluva to Maharaja's College costs Rs 50 and takes about 33 minutes.

The Water Metro: how you reach Fort Kochi without a car

Fort Kochi has no metro station, and that is the one place where visitors assume they need a taxi. They do not. The Kochi Water Metro, India's first water metro, runs air-conditioned electric ferries from Fort Kochi to the High Court terminal on the mainland in about 20 minutes for Rs 40. From High Court, electric feeder buses run every 15 to 20 minutes to MG Road and Maharaja's College metro stations. The whole crossing plus feeder leg costs less than a coffee and is the most pleasant ride in the city.

Water Metro routeFareTime
Fort Kochi to High CourtRs 40About 20 minutes
Mattancherry to High CourtRs 40About 25 minutes
High Court to VypinRs 30About 20 minutes

Boats run roughly 7 AM to 8 PM. On the Fort Kochi route the first weekday boat leaves at 8:25 AM and the last at 8:55 PM, while Mattancherry's last boat is 7:30 PM, so check the return time at the counter before an evening crossing. Two traps to avoid: there is no direct boat from Fort Kochi or Mattancherry to Vypin, you change at High Court; and the Mattancherry to Willingdon Island route is closed after a fishing boat accident, so do not plan around it. For longer stays, Water Metro passes cost Rs 240 for 12 trips over 7 days, Rs 750 for 50 trips over 30 days, and Rs 1,800 for 150 trips over 90 days, rates set on 1 June 2025.

City buses and autos: the cheap fill-in

Ordinary city buses are the cheapest way across town, with minimum fares around Rs 10, and they run the routes the metro does not, including out to the suburbs. They are crowded at peak hours and route boards are not always in English, so they suit short, simple hops better than cross-city journeys. Ask your hotel which bus number serves your stop.

Autos run on a state meter: Rs 35 for the first 1.5 km, then Rs 12 per km, with a 1.5 times night charge from 10 PM to 5 AM and Rs 1 per minute of waiting. In practice, insist on the meter before boarding, or book through an app where the fare is shown upfront. At railway stations and the KSRTC depot, prepaid auto counters use their own chart: a minimum of Rs 30 for up to 1.5 km, and Ernakulam Town station to Fort Kochi at Rs 280. That prepaid figure is a useful anchor when a street auto quotes far more for the same trip.

A no-car day in Kochi, step by step

Here is how a car-free day actually flows. Start in Fort Kochi on foot: the Chinese fishing nets, St Francis Church and the Jew Town lanes are all walkable. Mid-morning, take the Water Metro from Fort Kochi to High Court (Rs 40, about 20 minutes), then the feeder bus or a short auto to MG Road metro. Ride the metro south to Vyttila if you want the mobility hub, or north to Edapally for the Lulu Mall belt. In the evening, reverse the route and be back at the Fort Kochi jetty well before the last boat. Pair this with our Kochi 1 day itinerary for the stop-by-stop version, and our best area to stay in Kochi guide if you are still choosing where to sleep: Fort Kochi suits walkers, Marine Drive suits metro users.

When a cab still wins

Public transport covers almost everything, but four cases still favour a cab. First, the airport with heavy bags: the metro stops at Aluva, about 4 km short of the terminal, so the last leg needs a bus or auto. Our Kochi airport to Fort Kochi taxi fare guide puts a prepaid taxi at Rs 1,340 to Rs 1,500 and the bus at about Rs 100. Second, after 10 PM, when the metro stops and Water Metro boats have ended. Third, a Fort Kochi evening after the last boat, when the road is the only way back. Fourth, heavy rain, when a covered cab beats a wet jetty queue. For everything else, the metro plus boat plus auto combination is cheaper and usually faster than a car in traffic.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Kochi Metro go to Fort Kochi?

No. The metro serves the mainland only. Reach Fort Kochi by the Water Metro ferry from High Court (Rs 40, about 20 minutes) and then walk or take a short auto at the Fort Kochi end.

Can one card cover the metro and the ferries?

Yes. The Kochi1 card works on both the metro train and the Water Metro, and gives a small discount on metro fares. You can also pay cash or card at Water Metro counters.

What time does the last Water Metro boat leave Fort Kochi?

On weekdays the last boat from Fort Kochi leaves at 8:55 PM, but the last boat back is not always the mirror of the last boat out, so ask at the counter before an evening crossing. Mattancherry's last boat is earlier, at 7:30 PM.

Are autos in Kochi metered?

They are supposed to be: Rs 35 for the first 1.5 km, then Rs 12 per km, with a 1.5 times night charge from 10 PM to 5 AM. Ask for the meter before boarding, or use a prepaid counter or an app where the fare is fixed upfront.

Is it realistic to do Kochi with no car at all?

Yes for the city itself. The metro, Water Metro, buses and autos cover Fort Kochi, Mattancherry, Ernakulam, Vyttila and the airport corridor. You only need a car for out-of-city trips: our best day trips from Kochi guide covers those, including Athirappilly and Cherai.

Last updated: October 2026. Metro fares and Water Metro timings change: the fare chart at the station and the counter at the jetty are the final word on the day you travel.

Honest caveat: the Water Metro is weather dependent and boats can be cancelled in rough conditions, and the metro stops at 10 PM. Plan your last leg before you set out, not after dinner.
